Excerpt from The Royal Military Chronicle, or British Officers Monthly Register and Mentor, for May, 1813 Gsul Btl-zs owes his birth to a country, which has certainly contributed its due share both to the defence and glory of Europe, of which he is a member. His father was an Irish Gentleman we believe s Dublin merchant, at a time when Dublin had a trade as well as a Custom House. The family is very respectable, though not rich. Its best wealth perhaps is the reputation with which the acts of the son have gilded the modest worth of the paternal hearth. General Dilkes, we believe, was born about the year 1765. As his family is settled in Ireland, he probably received his education, such as it is, in Dublin. We say such as it is, as there is in fact a very wide difference, between the mode and practice of the education in Eng-p, land and Ireland. It is the custom of the latter country, we know no! From what cause, to introduce their youth earlier in life; and in order to qualify them for making a due figure, and for acting with some de corum and suficiency, it is deemed necessary both to commence their education earlier, and to force them as it were in a hot-bed, to cer tain premature acquisitions. In four out of ten, therefore, of our Irish Ofiicers, this characteristic will be observed; that they possess a good knowledge of arithmetic, and some acquaintance with their French, and perhaps their Latin Grammar, and here they stop; the early vice of their education follows them through life. They never add a particle to their knowledge from fifteen to fifty. It would bevery unjust to extend this remark to the many excellent officers now in our army but experience proves that it is the case with too many of them, and the most probable way of remedying it is to expose that insufficient mode of education which is the cause of it. I have seen, and am in the daily habit of seeing, many fine understandings which have been spoiled by it. From the Foreword: This volume provides short biographical sketches of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff who have led the United States Army. Their rise through the levels of leadership to the pinnacle of their profession reveals both striking parallels and equally fascinating contrasts. While their responsibilities have evolved over the years, the essential elements of leadership remain unchanged. The format of this volume combines biographical information along with the officially designated portraits of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff. It also includes brief accounts of the artists selected to paint the official portraits. As an aspect of the Army art program, these portraits add an interesting and revealing dimension to the biographer's words. This volume not only celebrates the legacy of dedication and patriotism left by these leaders, but also enhances our understanding of military leadership at the highest levels. All those interested in the profession of arms should become familiar with those who have led our Army.

"The Drillmaster of Valley Forge-Baron Von Steuben-correctly noted in his "Blue Book" how physical conditioning and health (which he found woefully missing when he joined Washington's camp) would always be directly linked to individual and unit discipline, courage in the fight, and victory on the battlefield. That remains true today. Even an amateur historian, choosing any study on the performance of units in combat, quickly discovers how the levels of conditioning and physical performance of Soldiers is directly proportional to success or failure in the field. In this monograph, Dr. Whitfield "Chip" East provides a pragmatic history of physical readiness training in our Army. He tells us we initially mirrored the professional Armies of Europe as they prepared their forces for war on the continent. Then he introduces us to some master trainers, and shows us how they initiated an American brand of physical conditioning when our forces were found lacking in the early wars of the last century. Finally, he shows us how we have and must incorporate science (even when there exists considerable debate!) to contribute to what we do-and how we do it-in shaping today's Army. Dr. East provides the history, the analysis, and the pragmatism, and all of it is geared to understanding how our Army has and must train Soldiers for the physical demands of combat. Our culture is becoming increasingly ''unfit," due to poor nutrition, a lack of adequate and formal exercise, and too much technology. Still, the Soldiers who come to our Army from our society will be asked to fight in increasingly complex and demanding conflicts, and they must be prepared through new, unique, and scientifically based techniques. So while Dr. East's monograph is a fascinating history, it is also a required call for all leaders to better understand the science and the art of physical preparation for the battlefield. It was and is important for us to get this area of training right, because getting it right means a better chance for success in combat.

Lady Hyegyong's memoirs, which recount the chilling murder of her husband by his father, form one of the best known and most popular classics of Korean literature. From 1795 until 1805 Lady Hyegyong composed this masterpiece, depicting a court life Shakespearean in its pathos, drama, and grandeur. Presented in its social, cultural, and historical contexts, this first complete English translation opens a door into a world teeming with conflicting passions, political intrigue, and the daily preoccupations of a deeply intelligent and articulate woman. JaHyun Kim Haboush's accurate, fluid translation captures the intimate and expressive voice of this consummate storyteller. Reissued nearly twenty years after its initial publication with a new foreword by Dorothy Ko, The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong is a unique exploration of Korean selfhood and an extraordinary example of autobiography in the premodern era.
