Excerpt from The Scarecrow and Other Stories Ben - " The woman stood in the doorway of the ramshackle, tumble-down shanty. Her hands were cupped at her mouth. The wind blew loose, whitish blond wisps of hair around her face and slashed the faded blue dress into the uncorseted bulk of her body. "Benny - oh, Benny - " Her call echoed through the still evening. Her eyes staring straight before her down the slope in front of the house caught sight of something blue and antiquatedly military standing waist deep and rigid in the com field. "That ole scarecrow," she muttered to herself, "that there old scarecrow with that there ole uniform onto him, tool" The sun was going slowly just beyond the farthest hill. The unreal light of the skies' reflected colors held over the yellow, waving tips of the corn field. "Benny -," she called again. "Oh - Benny!" And then she saw him coming toward her trudging up the hill. She waited until he stood in front of her. "Supper, Ben," she said. "Was you down in the south meadow where you couldn't hear me call?" Excerpt from The Scarecrow of Oz Meantime, I am deeply grateful to my little readers for their continued enthusiasm over the Oz stories, as evinced in the many letters they send me, all Of which are lovingly cherished. It takes more and more Oz Books every year to satisfy the demands of Old and new readers, and there have been formed many Oz Reading Societies, where the Oz Books owned by different members are read aloud. All this is very gratifying to me and encourages me to write more Oz stories. When the children have had enough of them, I hope they will let me know, and then I'll try to write something different. This is the Oz book which L. Frank Baum considered his best. It starts quietly enough with Trot and Cap'n Bill rowing along a shore of the Pacific Ocean to visit one of the many caves near their home on the California coast. Suddenly, a mighty whirlpool engulfs them. The old sailorman and the little girl are miraculously saved and regain consciousness to find themselves in a sea cavern. (To this day, Trot asserts she felt mermaid arms about her during those terrible moments under water.) From here on, one perilous adventure crowds in upon another. In Jinxland they meet the Scarecrow who takes charge of things once Cap'n Bill is transformed into a tiny grasshopper with a wooden leg. An exciting royal reception greets the adventurers upon their return to the Emerald City.
