Excerpt from The School of Infancy: An Essay on the Education of Youth, During Their First Six Years The apology for submitting this Essay on Education to the public, is comprised in a powerful impression of the vast importance of the subject, and in the belief that although multitudes of books have been written since it was originally published in 1633, yet that nothing has appeared at all comparable with it, much less as superseding it; and the wonder is, that a treatise of such inestimable value to a faithful Christian mother, should never until now have been presented to the English reader. The same may be said of most of the other educational works of Comenius; a thorough study of which would shew, to the truly Christian teacher of youth, the comparatively small progress really made at the present day in the faithful instruction of the young. The prefixed Biographical sketch is given with the view of answering the natural inquiry of a reader, "Who was John Amos Comenius?" A question which very few persons, in the absence of such a notice, would be able to answer. This account of Comenius has been compiled from the following works: - In Latin: - The author's Letter to Montanus, 10th Dec. 1661. Amsterdam, 1662, 24 mo; and such of his other works, including the "Didactica," as could be procured. History, political and ecclesiastical, of Moravia, by A. Pilarz, and F. Moravitz, Brunn. 1785, 1787, 3 parts, 8vo. Regenvolscius, Historical and Chronological Conspectus of the Slavonian Churches, Utrecht, 1652, 4to.
