At the time of its publication, this was the most extensive study of economic conditions since J. D. B. DeBow wrote The Industrial Resources of the Southern and Western States in 1852 and 1853. Focusing on the period 1607-1865, this volume examines all aspects affecting the development of the Southern economy. Factors contributing to the Civil War, particularly the economics of slavery and free labor, are discussed.
