The roar of cannon in France awakens the echoes of exploding shrapnel in South Africa and Kiau Chau. The closing of the Dardanelles increases the price of bread in Chicago and Pekin. The fierce desperation of Germany not only destroys the lives of a million of her foes, but condemns a hundred innocent citizens of the United States to instant execution. The devastation of Belgium starts a beneficent golden stream of ten million dollars a month in America. St. Paul's declaration applied to the Christian church, "None of us liveth to himself, and none dieth to himself," has today a world-wide application. As physical science materializes in corporations, transportation lines, and factories, so social science in its various branches develops concretely in associations, institutions, and public policies.
