The quartzite architectural block E16230 has been on display in the Penn Museum for 115 years. E16230 is one of the few large architectural pieces in the world surviving from the much-debated reign of the "heretic" king Akhenaten. This block is one of the most historically significant objects on display in the Egyptian galleries, yet it has never been analyzed or published. This volume addresses that glaring gap and provides for the first time a translation and discussion of the important texts on the object, along with analysis of the architectural evidence it provides. The block is part of the once intensely ornamented façade of a solar chapel ("sunshade") dedicated to princess Meritaten, the eldest daughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. The large (1100 kg) block originates in a chapel that was part of a royal ceremonial palace of Akhenaten named Per-Waenre ("the house of the Unique-one-of-Re"). Later, after demolition of the building, the block was reused in the city of Heliopolis as the base for a sphinx of king Merenptah (Dynasty 19). Subsequently the block underwent a final stage of reuse in Cairo in the Islamic Period where it was found ca. 1898 in the Mousky district of central Cairo. Because the block is such a major architectural element it provides considerable detail in the reconstruction of the essential appearance, decoration, and other aspects of the Meritaten sunshade. The volume addresses the significance of the piece and the Meritaten sunshade in the context of Akhenaten's monumental program. Major implications emerge from the analysis of E16230 providing further evidence on the royal women during Akhenaten's reign. The book examines two possibilities for the original location of the Per-Waenre in which the Meritaten sunshade stood. It may be part of a large Amarna Period cult precinct at Heliopolis, which may, like the capital city at Tell el-Amarna, have born the wider name Akhet-Aten, "Horizon of the Aten." Alternatively it could derive from Tell el-Amarna itself, possibly belonging to a hitherto unidentified palatial complex at that site. The book is a contribution to the study of one of the most debated eras of ancient Egyptian history focused on this long-ignored treasure of the Penn Museum's Egyptian collection. University Museum Monograph, 144

An addictive fantasy romance from TikTok sensation Piper CJ, now newly revised and edited. Two orphans grow into powerful young women as they face countless threats to find their way back to each other. Farleigh is just an orphanage. At least, that's what the church would have the people believe, but beautiful orphans Nox and fae-touched Amaris know better. They are commodities for sale, available for purchase by the highest bidder. So when the madame of a notorious brothel in a far-off city offers a king's ransom to purchase Amaris, Nox ends up taking her place — while Amaris is drawn away to the mountains, home of mysterious assassins. Even as they take up new lives and identities, Nox and Amaris never forget one thing: they will stop at nothing to reunite. But the threat of war looms overhead, and the two are inevitably swept into a conflict between human and fae, magic and mundane. With strange new alliances, untested powers, and a bond that neither time nor distance could possibly break, the fate of the realms lies in the hands of two orphans — and the love they hold for each other.

“Observing the Sun” is for amateur astronomers at all three levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The beginning observer is often trying to find a niche or define a specific interest in his hobby, and the content of this book will spark that interest in solar observing because of the focus on the dynamics of the Sun. Intermediate and advanced observers will find the book invaluable in identifying features (through photos, charts, diagrams) in a logical, orderly fashion and then guiding the observer to interpret the observations. Because the Sun is a dynamic celestial body in constant flux, astronomers rarely know for certain what awaits them at the eyepiece. All features of the Sun are transient and sometimes rather fleeting. Given the number of features and the complex life cycles of some, it can be a challenging hobby. “Observing the Sun” provides essential illustrations, charts, and diagrams that depict the forms and life cycles of the numerous features visible on the Sun.

The term Maintenance of a building refers to the work done for keeping an existing building in a condition where it can perform its intended functions. Usually, the buildings last only for 40 to 50 years in a good shape just because of regular inspection and maintenance that enable timely identification of deteriorated elements. Overlooked dilapidation, inadequate maintenance and lack of repair works may lead to limited life span of a building. This comprehensive book, striving to focus on the maintenance, repair & rehabilitation and minor works of a building, presents useful guidelines that acquaint the readers with the traditional as well as modern techniques for upkeeping and repairing of buildings already constructed. Dexterously organised into five parts, this book in Part I deals with the maintenance of buildings. Description of the construction chemicals, concrete repair chemicals, special materials used for repair, and repair of various parts of a building is given in Part II. Strengthening of reinforced concrete members by shoring, underpinning, plate bonding, RC jacketing and FRP methods are explored in Part III, which also highlights rebuilding of RC slabs and protection of earth slopes. Part IV of the book exposes the reader to the minor works done in a building such as construction of compound walls, gates, waters sumps, house garage, relaying of floors, joining two adjacent rooms and so on. Part V is based on some allied topics involving control on termites and fungus in buildings as well as introduction of Vaastu Shastra and its main recommendations for a single house in a plot. Using an engaging style, this book will prove to be a must-read for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering as well as for the polytechnic and ITI diploma students. Besides, the book will also be of immense benefit to the technical professionals across the country. KEY FEATURES • The text displays several figures to make the concepts clear. • Chapter-end references make the text suitable for further study. • Appendices at the end of the text provide extra information on non-destructive field tests for survey of the condition of concrete buildings and rough estimation of the construction and maintenance costs of buildings.
