Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Mechanics A course in theoretical mechanics often lacks the strength and vitality resulting from practical applications, whereas a course in applied mechanics is likely to be so technical and limited in its range as to obscure the meaning and s00pe of the fundamental principles involved. By properly combining theory and practice the efficiency of instruction is greatly increased, and mechanics also becomes a powerful instrument for coordinating mathematics and physics with technology. In this text the aim is to present the fundamental principles of mechanics in such a way as to emphasize their actual significance and relationship, and at the same time make them a matter of intelligent interest to the average student of junior grade in col leges and universities, and in technical and engineering schools. In each article the explanation is given a body by direct applica tion to some practical problem within the range of the student's experience or understanding. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Excerpt from Rational and Applied Mechanics This book is written primarily for students entering upon their second collegiate year. Their knowledge of mechanics is limited to what was gained during their study of physics and from practice in laboratory and shop; hence no apology is needed for making matters plain and easy in the first chapters of a work which later on leads up to the Theory of Structures, Internal Stress, Motion under Complicated Conditions, Forms of Energy, and higher Graphics. Author: Thomas Dawson

ISBN-13: 1461342775

This book is intended for use by engineers and scientists who have a need for an introduction to advanced topics in solid mechanics. It deals with modern concepts of continuum mechanics as well as with details of the classical theories of elasticity, thermal elasticity, viscous elasticity, and plasticity of solids. The book assumes no prior knowledge of the mechanics of solids and develops the subject entirely from first principles. Rigorous derivations of governing equations are also followed by applications to a number of basic and practical problems. Cartesian tensors are used throughout the book to express mathematical concepts in a clear and concise fashion. Chapter I, accordingly, provides a discussion of this topic for those readers not already familiar with it. This material is then followed by detailed discussions in Chapters 2 and 3 of the kinematics of continuum motion and the fundamental principles of mass conservation and momentum balance. Unlike traditional treatments, this material is first developed for the general large-deformation case and only then restricted to small deformations for use in the usual engineering appli cations. In this way the reader thus gets a fuller picture of the basic governing relations of solid mechanics.

Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory.
