Excerpt from Nature Stories for Young Readers: Animal Life The subjects of this series of lessons are mainly such insects or other animals as the children may observe for themselves. The lessons aim to give illustrations of some of the varied means of self-protection employed by animals; their methods of home-building and of caring for their young; the transformations they undergo; the adaptability to their surroundings as shown by their coverings and the tools with which the various animals are provided. The purpose in attempting to bring these thoughts to the youngest readers is manifold. It is hoped that such readers may become interested, while children, in the abundant life about them, and that when this interest is gratified by learning of the wonderful lives and habits of these little people, a respect for all life may be inculcated. The mid-thirteenth century AD marks the beginning of tremendous social change among Ancestral Pueblo peoples of the northern US Southwest that foreshadow the emergence of the modern Pueblo world. Regional depopulations, long-distance migrations, and widespread resettlement into large plaza-oriented villages forever altered community life. Archaeologists have tended to view these historical events as adaptive responses to climatic, environmental, and economic conditions. Recently, however, more attention is being given to the central role of religion during these transformative periods, and to how archaeological remains embody the complex social practices through which Ancestral Pueblo understandings of sacred concepts were expressed and transformed. The contributors to this volume employ a wide range of archaeological evidence to examine the origin and development of religious ideologies and the ways they shaped Pueblo societies across the Southwest in the centuries prior to European contact. With its fresh theoretical approach, it contributes to a better understanding of both the Pueblo past and the anthropological study of religion in ancient contexts This volume will be of interest to both regional specialists and to scholars who work with the broader dimensions of religion and ritual in the human experience.

Excerpt from The Growth of Groups in the Animal Kingdom: With Two Coloured Plates This book deals with the subject of evolution in a somewhat discursive manner, but its main theme is indicated by the title. It points out that groups of like animals, such as are small in membership and temporary in duration, are common in nature. These groups are not considered to be equivalent to species, they are referred to as family groups. A large part of the book deals with the origin, fate, and significance of such groups. Here and there the question, What is a species? is raised, but not answered. The tenth chapter is an attempt to show that the Mutation Theory is important to the physician, and the last chapter borders on philosophy. The whole appears more compact, if it be regarded as an attempt to help on the new movement in biology, to spread those ideas referred to by some as the Mutation Theory, by others as Mendelism, ideas that are permanently associated with the names of Mendel, Bateson, and De Vries. The writer's warrant for asserting himself lies not in the bulk, but in the variety of his experience, which has been derived from several sources, but from none in particular. One of the most significant transformations of the Roman world in Late Antiquity was the integration of barbarian peoples into the social, cultural, religious, and political milieu of the Mediterranean world. The nature of these transformations was considered at the sixth biennial Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity Conference, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in March of 2005, and this volume presents an updated selection of the papers given on that occasion, complemented with a few others,. These 25 studies do much to break down old stereotypes about the cultural and social segregation of Roman and barbarian populations, and demonstrate that, contrary to the past orthodoxy, Romans and barbarians interacted in a multitude of ways, and it was not just barbarians who experienced "ethnogenesis" or cultural assimilation. The same Romans who disparaged barbarian behavior also adopted aspects of it in their everyday lives, providing graphic examples of the ambiguity and negotiation that characterized the integration of Romans and barbarians, a process that altered the concepts of identity of both populations. The resultant late antique polyethnic cultural world, with cultural frontiers between Romans and barbarians that became increasingly permeable in both directions, does much to help explain how the barbarian settlement of the west was accomplished with much less disruption than there might have been, and how barbarian populations were integrated seamlessly into the old Roman world.
