Twelve-year-old Eli lives in ancient Israel and dreams of being a treasure hunter instead of his uncle's metal-smithing apprentice. Uncle Shem is the kind of man who would tell Jesus that He walked on water the wrong way. When Eli accidentally breaks Uncle Shem's latest invention, he sends the boy on a 120-mile journey to Jerusalem to deliver a fragile mirror, a seemingly impossible mission for a clumsy apprentice. Although it is peculiar that Eli's been given this quest soon after the arrival of a mysterious stranger who seems to share a secret past with Eli's uncle, Eli resolves not only to redeem himself in the eyes of his uncle, but also to begin his life as a real treasure hunter. He aims to find nothing less than the Ark of the Covenant! On the morning of departure, the stranger bequeaths a worn Roman artifact to Eli, who never dreams how much he'll appreciate the object along the dangerous road to the City of David. And there's another reason to visit Jerusalem in AD 33: Jesus. For who other than the all-knowing Son of God might know where to find the ultimate treasure?

Alfred Hayes is one of the secret masters of the twentieth century novel, a journalist and scriptwriter and poet who possessed an immaculate ear and who wrote with razorsharp intelligence about passion and its payback. My Face for the World to See is set in Hollywood, where the tonic for anonymity is fame and you’re only as real as your image. At a party, the narrator, a screenwriter, rescues a young woman who staggers with drunken determination into the Pacific. He is living far from his wife in New York and long ago shed any illusions about the value of his work. He just wants to be left alone. And yet without really meaning to, he gets involved with the young woman, who has, it seems, no illusions about love, especially with married men. She’s a survivor, even if her beauty is a little battered from years of not quite making it in the pictures. She’s just like him, he thinks, and as their casual relationship takes on an increasingly troubled and destructive intensity, it seems that might just be true, only not in the way he supposes.

The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

LAUGHING IN THE FACE OF TERRORISM is a collection of five books under a new title making the works affordable and a bargain for teachers and students of literature, culture, diversity seekers and the general public. The search for harmony is a main theme in Tejani's work and here he speaks of it in words destined to be classic: Music has the sweetness of the September sun, the tenderness of a bird call in the woods, the depth of unknown oceans and the serenity of the earth's swift strong glide across space. You will marvel at the incredibly comic mission of the new Indian immigrant in America to teach Americans how to speak English properly. Or rejoice in the friendship between Washington, America's First President and a Muslim boy on Mount Rushmore. Even wonder at Shakespeare committing suicide on the stage. For variety, Tejani teases the women of the world by comparing their scent to the aroma of rain on earth; and exposes the vulnerability of men with satire on their pre-occupation with the 'thermostat between their legs'. In this collection Ba Tejani has set out with mischief in his heart, irreverent wisdom in his hands and a tickling, teasing imagination which carries you on with a smile and a large question. Just what is he upto? What gifts of humanist synthesis does he have in his heart that we emerge refined and delighted and not peeved after reading one of his stories or watching his play? 451 Pages
