Excerpt from The Early Treatment of War Wounds It was perhaps inevitable that advances should at first be somewhat slow. During the last year or two affairs appear to have progressed more rapidly and satisfactorily, and great improvements have been made in many directions. The early treatment of wounds, the prevention and treatment of shock and collapse, the operative procedures in all types of injury, and many other problems, have received close attention with the result that the advance in these and many other matters has been very marked. Thousands of limbs and lives are now saved which. At the commencement of the war, would have been regarded as irretrievably lost. The book is an account of our method of Wound Treatment, and it is so simple that a clever surgeon is unnecessary for the achieve ment of the best results, though a careful one is essential. Excerpt from Wounds in War: The Mechanism of Their, Production and Their Treatment Probably no branch of surgery has undergone more important changes, in consequence of the teachings of Lister and of Pasteur, than that of gunshot wounds. As antiseptic methods have, in certain cases, rendered possible the performance of operations on regions of the body hitherto untouched by the civil surgeon, and as they have, in others, enabled him to avoid interference, and war ranted him in substituting conservative treatment for the more radical measures of earlier times, so they have, in the treatment of the wounded in war, enabled the military surgeon to save lives and limbs, the latter of which, at all events, would, in the days of Larrey and Guthrie, have been sacrificed without hesitation. Excerpt from The Treatment of War Wounds The speedy exhaustion of the first edition of this little book has necessitated this second edition only about six months after the first was issued. The rapid progress made in the treatment of war wounds through clinical observation, but more especially by the active research work at the front, as well as at base hospitals and laboratories in England, France, and the United States, has been such that this edition is almost a new book, so largely has it been rewritten. The type has been entirely reset. The large space now given to shock, to the Carrel-Dakin and other methods of treatment, to fractures, tetanus, wounds of the head, chest, and joints, to gas gangrene, the Bull-Pritchett serum, orthopedic surgery, etc., will be welcomed, I am sure. The introduction of resumes of some of the more important papers, with appended short bibliographies, which will enable the reader to obtain fuller information, will commend themselves to those who wish for more. Even more fully than before I have had the efficient and welcome aid of experts in various special subjects, to whom my warm thanks are due. Excerpt from Wounds of the Thorax in War At the present time, it is obviously useless and undesirable to attempt to introduce statistical results or other statements marking out special cases. I have therefore endeavoured to make the account the result Of my own personal experience as well as of those With whom I have been brought into personal contact and I must leave the statistics of these inquiries to be dealt with in full by others when the time has come to collate from many different sources the general results of injuries in the Great War, and these will no doubt Show Wide differences in various theatres. I desire to express my thanks to the Director General of the Naval Medical Service for his permission to publish this short account. Also to Colonel Sir G. H.
