He was always whispering to the Queen some Story or other, and the Uneafiness which her Majesty suffered in Octoher 1662, upon Lady Casl tlenxain's being put about her, was imputed to his Insinuations. He had unhappily, in talking of Lady Castlemain, made Use Ofa Word to the Queen, which in Spanish is used by Lovers to their Mistresses, and which sometimes signifies an Enchantress. The O_ueen, not having been used to the Language of Lovers, imagined the Conntest was a real Sorceress, and cautioned the King against her. Upon the IGngs Inquiry how the Queen came to entertain such a Notion, the Fact was fixed upon Talbot, who being involved with the Duke of Buckingham in the Mischiefs which then distracted the Court, he was ordered to depart the Kin dom. The Jesuits thought him too busy and factious a Person to be suffered) even in their Society-, and therefore it_was thought, that by their Interest Pope Clement the lXth was prevailed on to dispense with his Vows, and to advance him to the titular Archbishoprick of Dublin, to which he was consccrated at Ghent or Antwerp on the 2d of May 1669.-Peter Walffi (q) affirms, that he was in the Year 1659 formally ejected out of the Society of the Jesuits, but names not for what Cause, though he says he knew it, and the great Person who procured his Ejection. It cannot be inferred by undeniable Consequence, that our Crom-Liagh, or the Briti/h Cromlech bore any Resemblance to Noah's Altar; yet it seems very probable, that there was no material Difference between them in their Make and Figure, We are told by the learned Author (h) before quoted, that the Vord in Hebrew fignifying Edzfimre, to build, imports the erecting of Stones one upon another, and that the Chaldee Word for an Altar signifies Stones orderly erected. Such then are found to be our Crom-liogh, and the Britijh Crom-lech, viz. rude unhewn Stone: placed onenpon another; and such seem to have been the first Altars after the Flood; norcan it be supposed, thrt Noah could be furnished with any other than course unhewed Stones, such as the Mounrains afforded, wherewith to erect his, Altar.
