Formally approved by Pope Francis, this present work is the contribution of the Pontifi cal Biblical Commission toward a more adequate understanding of the concepts of inspiration and truth that respects both the nature of the Bible and its signifi cance for the life of the Church. Drawing on a close reading of the Scriptures themselves, the document focuses on three main aspects: 1. The inspiration of Sacred Scripture and the exploration of its divine provenance 2. The truth of the Word of God, emphasizing the message about God and his project of salvation 3. Challenges that arise from the Bible itself, on account of certain aspects that seem inconsistent with its quality of being the Word of God

In order correctly to understand the written documents of antiquity, it is necessary to know something of the genius of the people among whom they were produced. Without this information, we are liable to great mistakes. Very different styles of writing have prevailed among the same nations at successive periods of their existence; and the deeper we penetrate into their mental history, the less literal and more poetical shall we find their methods of communication. Treats of the word of God in its historical formation and in its life in the Church. It treats, then, of the speech which God necessarily employs in his dialogue with mankind. Through an analysis of the functions of language, of the psychology of literary inspiration, of the social context of all speech, of the nature, the translation and the reception of the completed work, the author develops a theory of Biblical inspiration which is integral and organic because it is faithful both to the divine and the human aspect of God's word.
