The little village of Rough and Ready in Upper Mahantongo Township, Schuylkill County, PA is set in the center of the Mahantongo Valley, famous for its Pennsylvania Dutch culture -- especially the painted furniture. This book focuses on the social history of the village, anchored by information from the 1850 census and Salem Reformed Church cemetery records. This was the famous Isaac F Stiehly's church and most of the families mentioned were in his congregation. The book contains hundreds of photos, most over 100 years old, of life in the Valley. SHE’S ROUGH… After being terrorized by an evil tyrant, Hilda Berdottir, a no-nonsense Viking woman, established a Dark Age sanctuary for abused women.. And they are not only surviving, but have been thriving for five years now. Everything is perfect, except that the women have begun to yearn for the one thing that is a danger to their lives. Men! Oh, not for their companionship, but for their seed…as in children. They want to bed them, then shed them, not wed them. Holy Thor! Good thing there are no men around. Until… HE’S READY… Torolf Magnusson and his team of Navy SEALs are cruising along a Norwegian fjord like bleepin’ tourists when their reproduction Viking longship wrecks, and they somehow find themselves back in the tenth century outside a medieval version of a woman’s shelter. And the females women there are trying everything in their erotic repertoire to lure the men into their bed furs. Hoo-yah! Except for Hilda who wants nothing to do with Torolf. Until… TOGETHER, THEY’RE A MATCH… After Torolf and his comrades-in-arms rid the old Norse world of the villainous Steinolf, they return to present-day California. But oops! Somehow, Torolf accidentally brings Hilda along for the ride through time and space. What’s a guy to do when suddenly responsible for a reluctant girlfriend who is being stalked by a mad scientist bent on dissecting her thousand-year-old body? Especially when said body is so hot it’s making him think they were meant to be together, ready or not. Booklist Top Ten Romance Novel for 2006!! Winner of the Hughie Award for Best Time Travel Finalist for the PRISM Award in the Time Travel Category Finalist for the P.E.A.R.L. Award

n 1850, the Gold Rush town of Rough & Ready, California, briefly seceded from the United States in order to avoid paying a mining tax. This rollicking, western comedy reimagines the three months when it was a sovereign republic. Sprinkled with the hard-luck tales of pioneers and forgotten tidbits of early American history, this novel shines a light on the quirky characters who fueled the westward expansion. The town drunkard falls asleep in a cave and wakes up during an earthquake to find a giant gold boulder. To get the motherlode to market, he enlists a ragtag group of failed miners and oddball mountain men, including a priest who tends bar and a sheriff who's afraid of guns. The most dangerous bandits in California are poised to tear Rough & Ready apart. What will be the legacy of a forgotten independent nation inside of the United States?

Lucrécia Neves is ready to marry. Her suitors—soldierly Felipe, pensive Perseu, dependable Mateus—are attracted to her tawdry not-quite-beauty, which is of a piece with Sao Geraldo, the rough-and-ready township she inhabits. Civilization is on its way to this place, where wild horses still roam. As Lucrécia is tamed by marriage, Sao Geraldo gradually expels its horses; and as the town strives for the highest attainment it can conceive—a viaduct—it takes on the progressively more metropolitan manners that Lucrécia, with her vulgar ambitions, desires too. Yet it is precisely through this woman’s superficiality—her identification with the porcelain knickknacks in her mother’s parlor—that Clarice Lispector creates a profound and enigmatic meditation on “the mystery of the thing.” Written in Europe shortly after Clarice Lispector’s own marriage, The Besieged City is a proving ground for the intricate language and the radical ideas that characterize one of her century’s greatest writers—and an ironic ode to the magnetism of the material.

In this tender-hearted debut, set against the tumultuous backdrop of life in 1973, when homosexuality is still considered a mental illness, two boys defy all the odds and fall in love. Now in paperback. The year is 1973. The Watergate hearings are in full swing. The Vietnam War is still raging. And homosexuality is still officially considered a mental illness. In the midst of these trying times is sixteen-year-old Jonathan Collins, a bullied, anxious, asthmatic kid, who aside from an alcoholic father and his sympathetic neighbor and friend Starla, is completely alone. To cope, Jonathan escapes to the safe haven of his imagination, where his hero David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and dead relatives, including his mother, guide him through the rough terrain of his life. In his alternate reality, Jonathan can be anything: a superhero, an astronaut, Ziggy Stardust, himself, or completely "normal" and not a boy who likes other boys. When he completes his treatments, he will be normal—at least he hopes. But before that can happen, Web stumbles into his life. Web is everything Jonathan wishes he could be: fearless, fearsome and, most importantly, not ashamed of being gay. Jonathan doesn't want to like brooding Web, who has secrets all his own. Jonathan wants nothing more than to be "fixed" once and for all. But he's drawn to Web anyway. Web is the first person in the real world to see Jonathan completely and think he's perfect. Web is a kind of escape Jonathan has never known. For the first time in his life, he may finally feel free enough to love and accept himself as he is.

Sparks fly between a football pro and an ex-WNBA player. But he needs to prove that he’s more than a sports hero if he wants it all in this steamy standalone from the New York Times bestselling author of Down & Dirty and Hot & Heavy. Tanner: I may be a baller, but I’ve always tried to do the right thing. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in charge of my four younger sisters for half my life, or because I understand how important it is to be a role model—something I learned from my grandfather, a Southern Baptist preacher who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. Either way, my pro football career makes it easier to give back, so when a local rec center needs help, I do my best to even the playing field. And not just because Elara Vance, the smoking hot ex-WNBA player who runs the place, has me looking to score off the field. Elara: Before I got sidelined by an injury, my time on the court taught me that pro athletes are all flash and no substance. Sure, Tanner Green talks a good game and wields a big checkbook, but I’m not buying the whole good guy routine. Still, it’s hard to miss all the good he’s doing for my rec center and even harder to ignore the way one look from him makes me tremble in all the best ways. I just wish I knew if he’s for real. Something tells me a little one-on-one might be the only way to find out. . . . Praise for Rough & Ready “Loved it! Finally, a sports romance where the heroine is every bit the unapologetic badass athlete as the hero. Romance needs more female leads like Elara.”—Tricia Lynne, author of Moonlight & Whiskey “Rough & Ready is a spirited story line. The premise is entertaining, engrossing, and stimulating; the characters are confident and animated; the romance is impassioned and seductive.”—The Reading Cafe Look for all of Tracy Wolff’s seductive reads: The Ethan Frost series: RUINED | ADDICTED | EXPOSED | FLAWED The Sebastian Caine series: PLAY ME WILD | PLAY ME HOT | PLAY ME HARD | PLAY ME REAL | PLAY ME RIGHT | PLAY ME: THE COMPLETE STORY The Hotwired series: ACCELERATE The Lightning series: DOWN & DIRTY | HOT & HEAVY | ROUGH & READY The His Royal Hotness series: ROYAL PAIN | ROYAL TREATMENT And her standalone novels: LOVEGAME | FULL EXPOSURE | TIE ME DOWN This ebook includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Up until the time of Newton, scientists regarded the understandings of the physical world, at which they were arriving, as glimpses of the working of the Creator’s mind. Thus, the generalisations being formulated about the behaviour of matter – the “Laws of Nature” – were seen as the Creator's injunctions, to created matter, as to how it was to act. They were “laws” in the same sense as laws, Divine or human, about how people should behave: that is why the same word was used for both. And even now, scientific laws are occasionally spoken of as being “obeyed”! However, it is doubtful whether any practising scientist, religious believer or not, now thinks of laws in the way that the word literally implies. How, instead, scientists do or should view scientific laws has been debated since the time of Hume and Kant, and it is a vigorous field of investigation among current philosophers of science. In this book, scientists (physical and biological), historians and students of ideas, all of them theologically informed, tackle this topic from many angles. They do so in relation to the lead public lecture at the conference from which the book stems, given by the eminent and iconoclastic philosopher of science, Professor Nancy Cartwright. She asked the question, “How could laws make things happen?”, and her answer was “They couldn’t!”
