She cant just be a kid anymore, with a hula hoop and a bag of jax. The story begins with a forward explaining the workings of her family, opens a door into her personality and tells how Kite came to live in a small Texas town in 1968 where no one seemed to know about the Beatles or that racism was against the law. She is accepted in the town because she is kin to almost everyone. Her Texas kinfolk believe there is one Glory Child born into their family each generation that is destined for some kind of greatness. Kite seems to be the chosen one since she is beautiful, has a genius I.Q. and is very outspoken. Kite takes this Glory Child business all in stride, mostly because that is her personality and the title loses significance to her since her father was supposedly his generations Glory Child and she knew of nothing exceptional he ever did. Kite does appreciate being accepted and enjoys - as most teens would - fitting in as quickly as possible. Especially since her parents moved her into such a peculiar place where people speak slower and think unlike anyone shes met while growing up on multi-ethnic Air Force bases. The transition is not as easy for the rest of her family and her mother is somewhat of an outcast since she comes from a state that fought against the confederacy. A confusing point for Kite who thought the war between the states was over except for its historical relevance. The story moves quickly with something consequential occurring on each page as Kite and the town grow up together. The people are unusual but real. Kite is an honest soul and does not hold back as she moves the story along with her innocent and often self-centered insights into a complicated world when perspectives about women, race and other important issues were changing in a way that would affect generations to come.

Frazier B. Baker a married, 40 year-old African-American schoolteacher and the father of six children was appointed postmaster of Lake City, South Carolina in 1897 under William McKinley the 25th President of the United States. Local whites objected and had undertaken a campaign to force his removal. When these efforts failed to dislodge Baker, a mob attacked him and his family at night at their house, which also served as the post office. Baker and his infant daughter Julia Baker died at his house after being fatally shot during a white mob attack on February 22, 1898. The mob set the house on fire to force the family out. His wife and two of his other five children were wounded, but escaped the burning house and mob, and survived. On December 10, 2018, U.S. Representative. James Clyburn, D-S.C., introduced a bill to rename the Lake City Post Office after Baker, saying it would ensure that his story won’t be forgotten. The state’s entire congressional delegation co-sponsored the bill, and President Donald Trump signed it into law December 21, 2018.

Disillusioned about the US’s involvement in Vietnam, and assigned to another unit headed back in-country in ninety days, our hero, Herman, jumps from the frying pan to the fire. He gets out of the Corps and becomes a cop. He has these super grandeurs of him returning to the street he became a man on, and being welcomed home by his people. But it didn’t happen that way. They called him Uncle Tom. At this point I take the reader through the day by day life of a black cop on the streets of San Diego. Through the Police Academy, a staged firing, to the bowls of the city as an undercover cop. No badge, no gun, super-deep, living in the streets, and becoming a part of the street scene. It was like.........being in the jungles again. But he stumbles on to some deep dog doo-doo. Ignoring the warnings to back off, Herman steps on a lot of big toes. Heads rolls, heads from City Hall to County Hall, and every hall in between. Herman goes to become a hero in the city. Climbing the ladder of success, he takes top detective of the year, twice. But the fallen powers of yester day were not sleeping. This is a book where the good guy looses. This is a book about the real world. Where the power of the system is the god. Where you play the game as you are instructed, or get off the feel. Our hero was too much of a boy scout. Too much of an idealist And Uncle Toms goes to prison. The bad-guys win. I show the readers Herman’s roller coaster life, the sounds and smell of the street, like never experienced before.
