Toby Ryker, a colorful old man similiar to J.B. Books in Swarthout's classic, "The Shootist," is forced to come to grips with his mortality. He moseys into Laramie and stirs up a saloon brawl just for the fun of it then pays for the damages, thus bailing everyone out of a passle of trouble. Moments later, he collapses of a heart attack. When he wakes up, the doctor directs him to adopt a quiet way of life. He looks up an old friend, David Stewart, a rancher living in the area who is now married with a family, and the two decide to go on a last hunting trip in the Medicine Bow Mountains. Ryker learns that McQuiston, a sadistic bounty hunter, has trailed him to Laramie over a shooting he committed in Deadwood. McQuiston kills a local cowboy soon after his arrival and the chase is on, with Ryker and Stewart hunting elk, McQuiston hunting Ryker, and the sheriff hunting McQuiston. The final shootout leaves McQuiston dead, but with a story ending that is not what it appears to be. A perfect holiday gift idea!

George Alwood III, is a spoiled and rich young man who heads west to become a mountain man in 1825. Taken under wing by two experienced old mountain men, George Alwood the third becomes Bear Killer the mountain man. After a short visit with Shoshoni Indians, Bear Killer finds himself with an unwanted wife and though he resist's, he eventually learns to love her. A cold and hard winter in the mountains brings him closer to his bride, as he learns to live as a mountain man, and just before spring she informs him a child will soon come. Content now, with a canvas shelter, campfire, dried meat, and soon to be family, Bear Killer reflects on his rich and pampered background. After his wife and unborn child are killed by white men, the young mountain man makes a promise to avenge their deaths and he's swept up into a deep sense of rage. He finds, however, the men he is searching for are hard men to pin down and even harder to kill. Reviewers say: "War Paint is a blood-thirsty brutal book. It will disappoint those who seek the triumph of good over evil. Outstanding." —James Drury, "The Virginian". “As a (Senior) Master Sergeant in the US military, W. R. Benton became a man of action and lived the “code of the west,” which is very well reflected in his westerns and especially in his newest, WAR PAINT, an action-packed story of love, struggle, betrayal, and revenge set in the wildness of the Old West. It is a must read for anybody who loves westerns. You will not be able to put the book down.” —Don Bendell, Author of 23 books, including the western Colt series, with over 1.5 million books in print worldwide. “WAR PAINT is for the western reader who wants to read something different, and for the western enthusiast who likes to know there is accuracy and authenticity in them thar pages. It’s an exceptionally good read, excellent plot, beautifully drawn characters, and well sustained from start to finish.” —Mel Hague, Author of Death on a Rope, and others, and Recording Artist of 17 albums Keywords: mountain man, indian, fur trade, western, old west, trapper, Western, Sioux

A new Young Adult Western, by acclaimed Western author W.R. Benton. In Dream Catcher, wiley mountain men Jed and Mule decide to swindle some local Indians by trading doctored-whiskey for beaver plews. The scheme has mixed results, and they wind up rescuing a black man named George. Attempting to stop a brewing war threat by the Sioux, the Army asks the mountain men to embark on a dangerous mission and return two Indian women captives to their tribe on the wild Plains. Unknown to the two mountain men, the native women are the wife and daughter of the Sioux chief, Bull Buffalo. Returning the captives and keeping their own skins intact is no easy task. Having never seen a black man, and due to his ‘raven-color’ skin, the Sioux consider George a buffalo god in human form, and during the mission to broker peace, George discovers a side of himself that he was unaware existed. Mule becomes emotionally invested in the well-being of both the Sioux captives and eventually forms a romantic connection to one of the women. The action is non-stop as the two mountain men join forces with the Sioux to battle a group of Buffalo-hide hunters set to slaughter the herds, no matter the cost. Suitable for Ages: 14 and up CONTENT CONTAINS: realistic depictions of frontier violence and death. Keywords: Hawken,Sioux, buffalo, spirit guide, the people, mountain man, knife
