Excerpt from Tourist's Guide to Cornwall and the Scilly Isles: Containing Succinct Information Concerning All the Principal Places and Objects of Interest in the County A few words by way of preface seem desirable in the case of this handbook, because it must necessarily differ in some respects from others of the series which Mr. Stanford is publishing. In the first place, it does not profess to be a Gazetteer or Directory to the county of Cornwall, nor to give such minute descriptions as to render a visit almost unnecessary. This would, in all probability, have resulted in a mass of information about many places which possess comparatively little interest for the tourist, and which are, moreover, difficult of access. Nor does it assume to give exhaustive descriptions of each of the numerous places of interest mentioned; to have given such would have swelled the volume to a size unsuitable for a knapsack. I have, however, endeavoured to deal pretty fully with all of those centres of interest which long experience indicates as the most attractive to visitors; and have, whenever it seemed desirable, given hints as to other sources of information to those who may be desirous of extending their researches. Whenever it has been practicable, I have endeavoured to give the meaning of the Cornish names of places, in the belief that such would not only add to the intelligent interest of the stranger, but would often throw a light upon the history or situation of the place described - convenient locis nomina saepissime. It should, however, be added that, owing to circumstances which will be referred to in their proper place, the etymology of Cornish names can seldom be discovered with certainty. 1906 Lady Elizabeth "Libby" Sinclair, with her love of microscopes and nature, isn't favored in society. She flees to the beautiful Isles of Scilly for the summer and stumbles into the dangerous secrets left behind by her holiday cottage's former occupant, also named Elizabeth, who mysteriously vanished. Oliver Tremayne--gentleman and clergyman--is determined to discover what happened to his sister, and he's happy to accept the help of the girl now living in what should have been Beth's summer cottage . . . especially when he realizes it's the curious young lady he met briefly two years ago, who shares his love of botany and biology. But the hunt for his sister involves far more than nature walks, and he can't quite believe all the secrets Beth had been keeping from him. As Libby and Oliver work together, they find ancient legends, pirate wrecks, betrayal, and the most mysterious phenomenon of all: love.
