"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 733: High-Performance/High-Strength Lightweight Concrete for Bridge Girders and Decks presents proposed changes to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) bridge design and construction specifications to address the use of lightweight concrete in bridge girders and decks. The proposed specifications are designed to help highway agencies evaluate between comparable designs of lightweight and normal weight concrete bridge elements so that an agency's ultimate selection will yield the greatest economic benefit. The attachments contained in the research agency's final report provide elaborations and detail on several aspects of the research. Attachments A and B provide proposed changes to AASHTO LRFD bridge design and bridge construction specifications, respectively; these are included in the print and PDF version of the report. This study examines the transfer and development length of 15.2 mm (0.6 in.) diameter prestressing strand in high performance (high strength) concrete. Two 1067 mm (42.0 in.) deep rectangular beams, commonly called the Hoblitzell-Buckner beams, each with one row of 15.2 mm (0.6 in.) diameter strands at 51 mm (2 in.) spacing on center, were instrumented to measure the transfer and development length of the strands. Concrete strengths were 48.5 MPa (7040 psi) at transfer and 90.7 MPa (13,160 psi) at the time of development length testing. The strand surface condition was weathered or rusty. Transfer length was determined from the concrete strain profile at the level of the strands at transfer.
