He has, with a few exceptions, examined the books him self, verified the titles and written the annotations. Of the fourteen libraries listed on a later page, work was done personally in all but two the Peabody and the British Museum. The plan has been, with reference to the libraries in Illinois, the Wisconsin Historical Library, and the Library of Congress, to have the key letters indicate whether the item is or is not to be found in the library. The other libraries were searched main ly for items which could not be found in these, and the absence of key letters for them does not mean that they do not possess the items.
