She’s the one girl this player can’t have. A human. I’m dying to claim the redhead who lights up the club every Saturday night. I want to pull her into the storeroom and make her scream, but it wouldn’t be right. She’s too pure. Too fresh. Too passionate. Too human. When she learns my secret, my alpha orders me to wipe her memories. But I won’t do it. Still, I’m not mate material—I can’t mark her and bring her into the pack. What in the hell am I going to do with her?

Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

This one-of-a-kind reference work provides essential data on some 10,700 manufacturers of automobiles, beginning with the earliest vehicle that might be so termed (Frenchman Nicolas Cugnot's steam carriage, in 1770) and covering all nations in which automobiles have been built--67 in all. Not an encyclopedia or collection of histories, this is instead a very complete registry providing essential facts about the manufacturers: complete name, location, years active, type(s) of vehicles built, and other basic data. Compiled during more than 30 years of research, this reference even lists companies that produced just one car. Any builder of passenger-carrying vehicles on at least two but no more than eight wheels, of any design, either mass produced or built as one-off specials, experimental cars, prototypes, or kit cars, is included. Builders of internal combustion, steam and electric powered vehicles are all covered; companies that built only trucks, buses, racing cars, or motorcycles are not included. From A.A.A. to Zzipper and Argentina to Yugoslavia, this is an astonishingly comprehensive resource.

Recent events show a deep-seated fear and frustration from the Rust Belt and those who used to populate our factories. Who are these people and how did we get here? How did both unions and management fail the factory worker? How are our once-vibrant city neighborhoods impacted by this seismic shift? A Collective Bargain examines the rich character of factory life and explores how the negotiating process is impacted by many factors beyond the control of even those who sit at the bargaining table. The novel takes place primarily in the grittiest sections of industrial New Jersey. Trey Bensen is a neighborhood kid returned to the local factory where he serves as a deft labor administrator and contract negotiator on behalf of management. The plant- Grean Machining- is part of a larger group of machine shops. Grean is privately held and owned by brothers seeking to sell the business and cash out, leaving their grimy industrial past behind. One buyer makes a lucrative offer contingent upon a new and more favorable labor contract. To accomplish this, the Grean brothers send their corporate “fixer” and family friend Harlowe Mikkelsen to make the deal. Mikkelsen casts his lot with Larry “The Turk” Turkel- International Union agent with an agenda quite different from the local workers in the plant. In an effort to sort through his conflicted feelings as both a management negotiator and a part of the community, Trey seeks the advice of his dying father, Earl. Earl Bensen seemed to be everywhere and seen everything in the labor movement in the preceding five decades. These life stories ultimately inspire Trey to take actions in the seams between the union and management resulting in unexpected and violent consequences. Anyone who seeks to give real identity and a face to the American factory worker will enjoy the rich characters who work to make a living at Grean Machining.
