THE DESIGN BRIEF: SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE –TURTLE HOUSE DESIGN (WITHIN AN AZTEC CULTURAL CONTEXT) SITUATION You are a turtle living in Mexico (South America) during the age of the Aztec civilisation. You see the Aztecs travelling every day by boat (canoe) transporting vegetables, meat, etc. on their waterways. You and your turtle family live on the banks of the large lake and swim among the Aztecs daily. Remember the Aztecs build their city (Tenochtitlan) on stilts in the water. It is the year 1521... DESIGN BRIEF Design a sustainable turtle house for you and your family. The structure has to house 4 x turtles in total, including your mom and dad (or caregivers). Use bio-mimetic principles to guide you (ask nature how). You have to think like a turtle. Draw on your experiences as a turtle and your research. However, you must design and construct it like a human being. In other words, 'think like a turtle and construct (design) like a human'. FOR TEACHERS: What is behind the lesson/design brief that could benefit students? What are employers looking for in employees in the modern era, which we live in? To access information and knowledge are easy. Everyone can do it with the click of a button. However, the question is "what can you do with what you know"? The answer of the person being interviewed is a very important one. Think about your answer if you are in a typical interview situation. 'What can you do with what you know?' Wagner (2012) identifies seven important areas that could be developed for students, regarding this question. How can we as teachers develop these skills of students? Wagner lists the seven important areas - that could be considered - as follow: Critical thinking and problem-solving (ability to ask the right questions) Collaboration across networks and leading by influence Agility and adaptability. Initiative and entrepreneurship Effective oral and written communication Accessing and analysing information Curiosity and imagination KEYWORDS: AZTEC, turtle, sustainability, architecture, gifted and talented, integrated learning, creativity, innovation, originality, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, agility, adaptability, initiative, entrepreneurship, verbal communication, written communication, analysing information, accessing information, curiosity and imagination, Design and Visual Communication, biomimetics, Tenochtitlan ESSAY RELATED TO THIS BOOK: *This is a follow up on an ESSAY by W van Zyl, which is about giftedness and talent (secondary school students). This resource includes a practical lesson (design brief) for gifted and talented students. Essay: The Creativity Debate: Talent or Practice – What Matters More? Are schools killing creativity, and what can I do as a high school teacher in New Zealand, to enhance creativity in my own practice as a Design and Visual Communication teacher? The essay is available at https://fivehousepublishing.com/ BOOK DETAILS: 4154 Pages including many images, sketches and video links.

The story of an ancient sea turtle and what its survival says about our future, from the award-winning writer and naturalist Though nature is indifferent to the struggles of her creatures, the human effect on them is often premeditated. The distressing decline of sea turtles in Pacific waters and their surprising recovery in the Atlantic illuminate what can go both wrong and right from our interventions, and teach us the lessons that can be applied to restore health to the world's oceans and its creatures. As Voyage of the Turtle, Carl Safina's compelling natural history adventure makes clear, the fate of the astonishing leatherback turtle, whose ancestry can be traced back 125 million years, is in our hands. Writing with verve and color, Safina describes how he and his colleagues track giant pelagic turtles across the world's oceans and onto remote beaches of every continent. As scientists apply lessons learned in the Atlantic and Caribbean to other endangered seas, Safina follows leatherback migrations, including a thrilling journey from Monterey, California, to nesting grounds on the most remote beaches of Papua, New Guinea. The only surviving species of its genus, family, and suborder, the leatherback is an evolutionary marvel: a "reptile" that behaves like a warm-blooded dinosaur, an ocean animal able to withstand colder water than most fishes and dive deeper than any whale. In his peerless prose, Safina captures the delicate interaction between these gentle giants and the humans who are finally playing a significant role in their survival. "Magnificent . . . A joyful, hopeful book. Safina gives us ample reasons to be enthralled by this astonishing ancient animal—and ample reasons to care." -- The Los Angeles Times

The Box Turtle Manual seeks to "help prospective owners keep their turtles healthy and happy." Given the low price tag placed on a box turtle in a pet shop, many casual shoppers add a box turtle to their household without preparation or knowledge about how to keep the animal alive. Since quality information is difficult to find on box turtles, Philippe de Vosjoli and Dr. Roger Klingenberger remedy the situation with this Advanced Vivarium Systems edition dedicated to box turtles. The authors believe that these popular and beautiful turtles;."may teach you one or two lessons about the delicate balance of life, natural law, and the many ways in which intelligence in manifested in nature." The book presents background information and guidelines for caring for a box turtle, including selecting a health specimen, acclimating the turtle, indoor and outdoor housing, heating and lighting requirements, feeding and handling, hibernation and breeding. The authors recommend three specific species of box turtles as good pet candidates: they provide photos and information on ornate box turtles, common Asian box turtles, and Chinese box turtles. Dr. Klingenberger provides a chapter on diseases and disorders that gives specific advice about dealing with dehydration, nutritional problems, parasitic problems, and vitamin deficiency. A five-page troubleshooting chart for health problems concludes the chapter. Resources and index included.
