Four best friends, one risky business, and a chance to say “I do” one more time. . . With their fledgling business Second Chances facing its first big break, four best friends turned wedding consultants face second chances–and challenges–of their own. For always-practical, always-predictable Elaine, it’s a time for a total makeover . . . but is the new “dream-her” really her? For Lily, the free-spirited, free-spending sprite, it was the chance to find the one thing missing from her life that not even money could buy. And while Sarah, the self-reliant artist, faces a crisis that proves just how much she needs her friends, ex-publicist Jo is tantalizingly closer to true love than she can ever possibly imagine. Ex-husbands, computer dating, teenage kids–the world’s much different than when they first said “I do,” but one thing’s the same: they’re all hoping their second chance will be a charm.

Can love, romance, and marriage really be better the second time around? That’s what four best friends are about to find out in Jean Stone’s sexy, smart, and poignantly funny new novel about saying “I do” all over again. It’s an idea just crazy enough to work–a wedding-planning business tailored for second weddings run by four single best friends who’ve loved, who’ve lost, and who are ready to start again. A successful Boston publicist, Jo Lyons has returned to West Hope after a devastating breakup left her career and her heart broken. Now she’ll try to pick up the pieces among the three women she knows best. Lily, the fun-loving, free-spirited eternal optimist. Sarah, the strong-willed unconventional artist. Elaine, the would-be domestic diva. It’s Elaine’s upcoming second marriage that will be the inspiration and test model for their new business, Second Chances. For Jo it just may be an unexpected second chance of a different, far more romantic kind, but only if she’s willing to give love–and life–another try.

Fairy tales, often said to be ''timeless'' and fundamentally ''oral,'' have a long written history. However, argues Elizabeth Wanning Harries in this provocative book, a vital part of this history has fallen by the wayside. The short, subtly didactic fairy tales of Charles Perrault and the Grimms have determined our notions about what fairy tales should be like. Harries argues that alongside these ''compact'' tales there exists another, ''complex'' tradition: tales written in France by the conteuses (storytelling women) in the 1690s and the late-twentieth-century tales by women writers that derive in part from this centuries-old tradition. Grounded firmly in social history and set in lucid prose, Twice upon a Time refocuses the lens through which we look at fairy tales. The conteuses saw their tales as amusements for sophisticated adults in the salon, not for children. Self-referential, frequently parodic, and set in elaborate frames, their works often criticize the social expectations that determined the lives of women at the court of Louis XIV. After examining the evolution of the ''Anglo-American'' fairy tale and its place in this variegated history, Harries devotes the rest of her book to recent women writers--A. S. Byatt, Anne Sexton, Angela Carter, and Emma Donoghue among them--who have returned to fairy-tale motifs so as to challenge modern-day gender expectations. Late-twentieth-century tales, like the conteuses', force us to rethink our conception of fairy tales and of their history.

College senior Stella Denton has very few prospects and even fewer suitors i.e. none when a gunshot wound to the head catapults her from 21st century Minneapolis to Jarmo, a real-life hunter-gatherer society circa 7000 BCE. Although Stella starts 'living sequentially' in both realities, she thrives far more in her ancient life. However, an impending war could also get her people slaughtered unless she takes immediate action to save herself and her tribe. During her dual-life journey, Stella draws the interest of Dr. Vale, an unappreciated, thirty-something professor of paleoanthropology, charismatic Chieftain Hari of the Jarmo tribe, and young Ashur, a prehistoric teenager in need of lessons in love. But when the time comes to make an irrevocable choice between the two, will Stella choose down-to-earth reality or the allure of the unknown?
