Diabetes is a multifaceted and intricate metabolic disorder that affects millions worldwide. At its core, diabetes revolves around the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, a seemingly simple process with profound implications. However, beneath the surface, diabetes unfolds as a complex dance of hormones, enzymes, and cellular communication. The Dance with Numbers: In diabetes, numbers become more than mere figures on a page; they represent the delicate tightrope walk between hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) can lead to a cascade of complications affecting vital organs, while low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can cause dizziness, confusion, and even life-threatening situations. Achieving the right balance becomes the ultimate goal-a captivating pursuit of numbers and precision. The Tug of War with Sugar: Sugar, an innocent pleasure in the ordinary world, takes on a new role in the realm of diabetes. Carbohydrates, a primary source of sugar, come under scrutiny as they transform into glucose, the fuel that energizes our bodies. The tug of war begins as insulin, the hormone maestro, steps in to unlock cells' gates and let glucose in. But in diabetes, the body resists the pull, creating a frustrating battle between insulin and insulin resistance. A Journey of Resilience: Amidst the complexity and challenges, diabetes reveals stories of remarkable resilience. People with diabetes become everyday heroes, mastering their bodies' rhythms and learning the art of balance. They embrace a journey that demands courage, discipline, and adaptability, finding strength in managing their condition while pursuing a fulfilling life. Step into the World: As we step into this world of diabetes, we venture into a realm where science meets hope, where perseverance is a constant companion, and where community support and cutting-edge research drive progress. Together, we navigate the twists and turns of this intricate labyrinth, seeking breakthroughs, empowering lives, and unraveling the mysteries of diabetes-a journey full of surprises and triumphs, fueled by the unwavering spirit of those living with and fighting against diabetes.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the multiple interrelationships between depression and various physical diseases. The WPA is providing an update of currently available evidence on these interrelationships by the publication of three books, dealing with the comorbidity of depression with diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Depression is a frequent and serious comorbid condition in diabetes, which adversely affects quality of life and the long-term prognosis. Co-occurrent depression presents peculiar clinical challenges, making both conditions harder to manage. Depression and Diabetes is the first book devoted to the interaction between these common disorders. World leaders in diabetes, depression and public health synthesize current evidence, including some previously unpublished data, in a concise, easy-to-read format. They provide an overview of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, medical costs, management, and public health and cultural implications of the comorbidity between depression and diabetes. The book describes how the negative consequences of depression in diabetes could be avoided, given that effective depression treatments for diabetic patients are available. Its practical approach makes the book ideal for all those involved in the management of these patients: psychiatrists, psychologists, diabetologists, general practitioners, diabetes specialist nurses and mental health nurses.

Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as hyperglycemia with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. The incidence of gestational diabetes is still increasing and this pathological condition has strong association with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Since gestational diabetes can have long-term pathological consequences for both mother and the child, it is important that it is promptly recognized and adequately managed. Treatment of gestational diabetes is aimed to maintain euglycemia and it should involve regular glucose monitoring, dietary modifications, life style changes, appropriate physical activity, and when necessary, pharmacotherapy. Adequate glycemic control throughout the pregnancy can notably reduce the occurrence of specific adverse perinatal and maternal outcomes. In a long-term prospect, in order to prevent development of diabetes later in life, as well to avoid associated complications, an adequate education on lifestyle modifications should start in pregnancy and continue postpartum.
