Vanishing England by P. H. (Peter Hampson) Ditchfield This book is intended not to raise fears but to record facts. We wish to describe with pen and pencil those features of England which are gradually disappearing, and to preserve the memory of them. It may be said that we have begun our quest too late; that so much has already vanished that it is hardly worth while to record what is left. Although much has gone, there is still, however, much remaining that is good, that reveals the artistic skill and taste of our forefathers, and recalls the wonders of old-time. It will be our endeavour to tell of the old country houses that Time has spared, the cottages that grace the village green, the stern grey walls that still guard some few of our towns, the old moot halls and public buildings. We shall see the old-time farmers and rustics gathering together at fair and market, their games and sports and merry-makings, and whatever relics of old English life have been left for an artist and scribe of the twentieth century to record. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from A Short History of England The aim of the book 1s to be instructive as well as interest ing. In it I have tried to tell a clear and simple story, avoid ing technical expressions, and yet passing over no important features of the history that are necessary for the proper under standing of the subject. The narrative is made as continuous as possible, that the reader may follow in unbroken sequence the thread of the story. It is accompanied with a large num ber of newly selected illustrations, and an ample supply of maps and chronological tables. The elaborate bibliographies contained in the larger work have been omitted, and only a brief but selective list of the best books of moderate length has been retained. The' history has been brought down to date ln matters of schcla-fsh'rp as well as chronology, and con tains many opinions and statements not to be found in the larger work. Excerpt from The Condition of England "I've got to a time of life," says the hero of a modern novel, "when the only theories that interest me are generalisations about realities," There are many contemporary observers who do not require advancing years and a wider experience of life to concentrate them upon so serious a study. It is not that they deliberately turn towards consideration of the meaning and progress of the actual life around them. It is that they cannot - with the best desire in the world - escape from such an encompassing problem. To those the only question before them is the present: the past but furnishing material through which that present can rightly be interpreted, the future appearing as a present which is hurrying towards them - impatient to be born. They ask for fact; not make-believe. With Thoreau, "Be it life or death," they will cry, "We crave only reality. If we are really dying, let us hear the rattle in our throats and feel cold in the extremities; if we are alive, let us go about our business." The following pages offer an attempt to estimate some of these "realities" in the life of contemporary England.
