This volume brings together experts on the quark-gluon structure of matter as it applies to nucleon resonance physics. The contributions discuss the latest findings in areas such as meson production via electromagnetic and hadronic reactions, baryon resonance structure in chiral and lattice QCD approaches, and the extraction of resonance parameters from coupled-channels analysis of data.

The VIII Latin American Symposium on Nuclear Physics and Applications (LASNPA) covered many topics including nuclear structure and reactions; nuclear and particle astrophysics; the study of matter and the strong force in the framework of quantum chromodynamics (QCD); tests of fundamental symmetries and the properties of neutrinos; applications of nuclear physics in medicine, art/archeology, energy, and national security; and advances in nuclear instrumentation and facilities. The meeting also included plenary presentations on the nuclear energy issue that attracted significant local media attention. These LASNPA Symposia are playing a key role in establishing and forging links among the many nuclear physics communities in Latin America. And with the growing importance of these meetings, it is anticipated that the LASNPA will continue to strengthen nuclear science within and throughout Latin America and will serve as a springboard for further strengthening ties between the Latin American nuclear physics communities and their colleagues worldwide.

Security Council Resolution 1540 is a critical tool for preventing non-state actors from obtaining weapons of mass destruction. Regional organisations could play a significant role in helping to implement the resolution. Do the experiences of these organizations in conventional security issues, such as small arms control, offer lessons for addressing weapons of mass destruction in regions where the issue is not considered a high priority? This book examines the experiences of organisations in Africa, Latin America, and South-East Asia and the Pacific to identify how they can motivate and assist their members with their commitments to implement Resolution 1540.

International collaboration has become increasingly important in carrying out research activities. This book, written by a large group of scholars from Europe and Latin America, maps, analyses and discusses research collaboration between the two continents during the last twenty years. The empirical material underlines the richness and the variety of the links that bind the two continents, well beyond the simplified views of science, either as the brainchild of global networking or as a result of dependence. The book also develops an innovative methodological approach, combining bibliometric analysis, social surveying, in-depth interviews, and a careful analysis of research programmes and policies. While arguing that the asymmetry of relations that once existed in cooperation has turned into a more equal partnership between the two continents, it deciphers some of the reasons behind this more balanced cooperation. It also challenges the view of science as a global self-organising system through collective action at the level of researchers themselves. On the contrary, the importance of policy, institutions, and previously developed research is highlighted and recognised
