This volume is concerned with tube vibrations in heat exchangers. It treats the causes of vibrations, the possibilities of allowing for them in the design stage, and recommends ways of suppressing them to acceptable levels. It presents clearly a large body of information on unsteady hydrodynamic processes and the forces acting on the elements of the structures. The recently accumulated data on flow-induced tube vibrations enjoy wide application and are of interest to designers of heat exchangers, as well as for researchers dealing with the problems of fluid dynamics and heat transfer in power plants.

The vibration of Heat Exchange Tubes due to hydrodynamic fluid coupling is an international problem for Nuclear fuel assemblies etc. on account of frequent failure of Heat exchanger tube, which causes not only expensive repair but a great loss to the plant. Thus, several studies in this field have been made so far. But here, a study of three circular cylindrical tubes in a liquid is done on the analytical approach. The author also describes the various parameters for maximum efficiency of heat transmission from Heat Exchanger's, which is defined as; nH =F (G/R, V) = Heat transmission efficiency of the heat exchanger, where G=gap between two adjoining tubes, R= Radius of cylindrical tubes (if considered of same diameters) and V= fluid flow velocity and geometry of tubes. The relations amongst the above parameters are yet to derive to solve this problem.

Tube vibrations in heat exchangers are being systematically investigated in a series of tests performed with an industrial-size test exchanger. Results from waterflow tests of eleven different tube bundles, in six- and eight-crosspass configurations on a 90° square layout with a pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.25 are reported. The test cases include full tube bundles, no-tubes-in-window bundles, finned tube bundles, and proposed field and design fixes. The testing focused on identification of the lowest critical flowrate to initiate fluidelastic instability (large amplitude tube motion) and the location within the bundle of the tubes which first experience instability. The test results are tabulated to permit comparison with results obtained from previous tests with a 30° triangular layout tube bundle. Instability criteria are evaluated preliminarily. Pressure drop data are also generated and reported.

Tubes in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, including nuclear plant steam generators, derive their support from longitudinally positioned tube support plates (TSPs). Typically there is a clearance between the tube and TSP hole. Depending on design and fabrication tolerances, the tube may or may not contract all of the TSPs. Noncontact results in an inactive TSP which can lead to detrimental flow induced tube vibrations under certain conditions dependent on the resulting tube-TSP interaction dynamics and the fluid excitation forces. The purpose of this study is to investigate the tube-TSP interaction dynamics. Results of an experimental study of damping and natural frequency as functions of tube-TSP diametral clearance and TSP thickness are reported. Calculated values of damping ratio and frequency of a tube vibrating within an inactive TSP are also presented together with a comparison of calculated and experimental quantities.
