Ba gua is one of the internal styles of the Chinese martial arts, a "circular" walking technique that helps train the mind and body to recognize and accept change. Characterized by its spinning movements and extremely evasive footwork, ba gua is often used as a means to protect others, much like a good mother holding her child’s hand as they cross a busy street. In this combination of philosophical treatise, health manual, and self-defense text, Allen Pittman details the history, philosophy, and techniques of straight-line ba gua zhang, which means “eight trigram palm” in reference to the seminal trigrams of the I Ching. The book contains eight parts corresponding to the eight sections of the I Ching, each representing a different elemental manifestation and martial arts principle. Descriptions of the symbology, cultural, anatomical, and tactical details of each set are taught as well as detailed instructions on the form practice. Illustrated throughout with step-by-step drawings and photographs, the book shows how ba gua zhang, driven by I Ching wisdom, helps students cultivate a sense of centeredness and spontaneity and use this “martial art” in every aspect of their lives.

This book contains a dramatic and revealing translation of this ancient classic into English. The Chinese original is set side-by-side with the translation. Two things set this work apart from other translated versions. First, archeological findings are used to uncover the meaning of passages obscured for thousands of years. Second, it preserves the flavor of the original in a poetic rendition. An introductory part of this book provides the historical and philosophical background to the I Ching . The story is told of the ancient Chinese civilization, pointing out events and figures mentioned in the I Ching . The undisguised face of the I Ching will appeal to the modern reader, who will read it in his or her own individual way, as poetry, as discoverer of self, or as soothsayer. It is in the grand tradition of the I Ching for different people to see different things.: To Confucius, who was born in 550 B.C., it was a source of ethics.; To Leibnitz, the eighteenth-century inventor of calculus, it was the essence of binary mathematics.; To Jung Freud''s rival in psychology, it was an explorer of the unconscious.; To some Wall Streeters, it predicts the stock market. This second edition includes a new chapter on a historical perspective, and other additions, changes and minor reformatting. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (285 KB). Readership: Graduate and undergraduate students, academic researchers, scholars who are interested in Chinese classics, history and culture; general audience interested in Chinese classics and culture.

Ancient Wisdom for a Better Life I Ching was created 6,500 years ago. As stated in Zhou Li (~ 1,100 BC), there are three versions of I Ching: Gui Cang Yi, Lian Shan Yi and Zhou Yi. All three address eight trigrams and sixty-four hexagrams. Around 500 BC, Confucius and his disciples compiled ten commentaries on Zhou Yi. These commentaries emphasise Confucianism, and provide instruction on how to handle fifty yarrow sticks for divine reading. Later on, around 200 AD, Zhou Yi and the commentaries were combined, into what is known today as I Ching. Based on fifty years' experience in science and research on Chinese classics, and for the first time, the author of “The Power of I Ching” reveals the true nature of I Ching and how to use it to live in harmony with others and benefit yourself.
