None could be idle but the very young and the very old: little Rol, who was hugging a puppy, and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. The early evening had closed in, and the farm-servants, come from their outdoor work, had assembled in the ample hall, which gave space for a score or more of workers. Several of the men were engaged in carving, and to these were yielded the best place and light; others made or repaired fishing-tackle and harness, and a great seine net occupied three pairs of hands. Of the women most were sorting and mixing eider feather and chopping straw to add to it. Looms were there, though not in present use, but three wheels whirred emulously, and the finest and swiftest thread of the three ran between the fingers of the house-mistress. Near her were some children, busy too, plaiting wicks for candles and lamps. Each group of workers had a lamp in its centre, and those farthest from the fire had live heat from two braziers filled with glowing wood embers, replenished now and again from the generous hearth. But the flicker of the great fire was manifest to remotest corners, and prevailed beyond the limits of the weaker lights.

From the times of the world's birth, when the Sea's parted the lands, a lone child was abandoned by his father in the winter snows. This young boy was adopted and raised within a pack of Dire wolves. This human child was given the name of Wer, the sound the wolves make for man. Wer not knowing his place within the pack was bitten many times, but unlike other animals, Wer was not driven mad by the first strains of Rabies. He became big and strong just like all the Dire wolves, but on the night of the full moon and in his twenty first year, Wer became another. He is known as Changer and the Beginning, able to turn himself at will, Wer becomes leader of this pack. Questions are answered within this story of who was the big bad wolf, little red riding hood and how the werewolf race populated the earth. Reasons why you cannot find Lord Wer and king Arthur protected by the one known as Excalibur and the white and black magic that surrounds these myths and legends that have changed so much over time. So our story begins of how the Werewolves, Lycan's and Shapeshifters came to be from the one Known as the Beginning, Wer-Wolf.

The conflict that ravaged seventeeth-century Europe, as seen in a classic German novel--freshly translated The Thirty Years War, fought between 1618 and 1648, was a ruthless struggle for political and religious control of central Europe. Engulfing most of present-day Germany, the war claimed at least ten million lives. The lengthy conflict was particularly hard on the general population, as thousands of undisciplined mercenaries serving Sweden, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and various German principalities, robbed, murdered, and pillaged communities; disease spread out of control and starvation became commonplace. In The Warwolf, Hermann L ns's acclaimed historical novel, the tragedy and horrors of war in general, and these times in particular are revealed. The Warwolf, based on the author's careful research, traces the life of Harm Wulf, a land-owning peasant farmer of the northern German heath who realizes after witnessing the murder of neighbours and family at the hands of marauding troops that he has a choice between compromising his morals or succumbing to inevitable torture and death. Despite his desire for peace, Wulf decides to band with his fellow farmers and live like "wolves," fiercely protecting their isolated communities from all intruders. L ns's brilliant portrayal of the two sides faced by any person in a moral crisis--in Harm Wulf's case, whether to kill or be killed--continues to resonate. Originally published in 1910 and still in print in Germany, The Warwolf is available for first time in English.

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska. Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect? Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.
