LET'S TALK ABOUT EPILEPSY BY Ann Marie Gillie If you don't believe in yourself than who will? I have come a very long way in life over the past 9 years and I owe it to all of those that believed in me, that stood behind me even when I was at my lowest point. I am a survivor of "Brain Surgery" yes, but more importantly I am a BELIEVER which means that I can do what ever I put my mind to. Writing Let's Talk About Epilepsy came about for me after getting such an amazing response from my first book, If Walls Could Talk: Don't let epilepsy control you! In this new book I am very pleased and honored to share some incredible stories from others that also made a life altering decision, which was to have brain surgery. It is amazing how similar we all are and it doesn't matter our ages, nationalities or where we live in the world; we seem to have a bond with one another and it feels great! Along with some personal experiences with epilepsy, I passed out some questions for whoever chose to answer them, questions like; how many different meds have you been on for your seizures? Did epilepsy affect your education, either elementary, high school or college/university? Did or does having epilepsy affect any specific relationships in your life? Have you ever gone for a second opinion? I had some great answers to all these questions; I did throw my own answers in as well, of course! I think the inspiration in this book is going to help those out there that struggle with epilepsy in their own life; it is unfortunate that not everyone has a place to go, talk or feel safe in when it comes to their epilepsy or seizures, but I hope after reading these incredible stories that you will find a place, or support group that fits what you need; that your life will become more positive than you could of imagined. I know from my own personal experience that support is the key when it comes to almost everything in one's life, sometimes we just might need a bit of a nudge to get it! BELIEVE in yourself!!

I don’t know why people are afraid of people who have epilepsy. It’s just a condition. It’s not something you can catch; it is not contagious. Epilepsy has to do with the brain. Like me, I was born perfectly normal. However, I had one of my blood vessels on the left side of my brain bust. That is why I have seizures for the rest of my life. Epilepsy is not a bad word. It is only a condition. Doctors are doing more research on it so they can try out new medication that may control the seizures much better. Maybe one day, they will find a stronger medication for epilepsy. I will do everything in my power to make sure that people with epilepsy will have a better life. Maybe one day, that would be cool. Maybe my life is not perfect. People think I can’t do anything, but they should think again. I can do anything when I put my mind to it. I can do it.

Although epilepsy is one of the nation's most common neurological disorders, public understanding of it is limited. Many people do not know the causes of epilepsy or what they should do if they see someone having a seizure. Epilepsy is a complex spectrum of disorders that affects an estimated 2.2 million Americans in a variety of ways, and is characterized by unpredictable seizures that differ in type, cause, and severity. Yet living with epilepsy is about much more than just seizures; the disorder is often defined in practical terms, such as challenges in school, uncertainties about social situations and employment, limitations on driving, and questions about independent living. The Institute of Medicine was asked to examine the public health dimensions of the epilepsies, focusing on public health surveillance and data collection; population and public health research; health policy, health care, and human services; and education for people with the disorder and their families, health care providers, and the public. In Epilepsy Across the Spectrum, the IOM makes recommendations ranging from the expansion of collaborative epilepsy surveillance efforts, to the coordination of public awareness efforts, to the engagement of people with epilepsy and their families in education, dissemination, and advocacy for improved care and services. Taking action across multiple dimensions will improve the lives of people with epilepsy and their families. The realistic, feasible, and action-oriented recommendations in this report can help enable short- and long-term improvements for people with epilepsy. For all epilepsy organizations and advocates, local, state, and federal agencies, researchers, health care professionals, people with epilepsy, as well as the public, Epilepsy Across the Spectrum is an essential resource.

Treatment options, lifestyle strategies, and emotional support for two million Americans. Epilepsy, once mistakenly associated with demonic possession, has for centuries been a poorly understood illness. Today, though it affects nearly one out of every one hundred Americans, little comprehensive information can be found on bookshelves regarding this common and complex neurological disease. Until now! Using his expertise in pharmacology and neuroscience, Dr. Carl Bazil demystifies epilepsy and other seizure disorders and offers medical, practical, and emotional support to patients and their families. He explains how and why seizures occur, and thoroughly discusses treatment options, the pros and cons of surgery, experimental and alternative treatments, strategies for daily living, and much more. Substantiated with case examples, this useful book provides a much-needed window into epilepsy so that patients can achieve the full life they deserve.

This book provides the tools you need to raise a child with epilepsy, to support his/her social development, provide effective discipline, and negotiate the educational system. Each stage in your child's life presents unique issues and problems, ranging from finding day care to school programming to driving. This book is organized so that you can go to the information that you need when you need it, returning for updates as your child grows and new issues emerge. In her 20 years of working with children with epilepsy, Dr. Blackburn has been continually impressed by the fact that no two children with epilepsy are the same. Each child and each family has unique needs. Because of this, she works with a team. The unique talents of each team member let the group meet the unique needs of each patient. This book will help you build the resource team for your child. In addition to providing you with basic tools, the book identifies resources, places you can contact, additional materials you can read, and the kinds of professionals that may be in your community to help you and your child. Every parent is busy, and parents of children with epilepsy may be evenbusier than most. This book has been organized with the busy parent in mind. The first four chapters are a "must read" for every parent. Theyprovide the basic tools for understanding epilepsy, behavior management and school programming. The final chapter summarizes parenting of a child with epilepsy, providing an easy to remember checklist. Issues for parenting a toddler with epilepsy are far different than issuesfor parenting an adolescent. You can go to the information that you need, when you need it, returning to the book for an update as your child grows and new issues emerge. You can select the section that is important to you in understanding your child, reading the other chapters when you have time and/or want to know more about the brain in general. Childhood epilepsy may provide speed-bumps in the road to adulthood, but it does not have to be a barricade. For 20 years, Dr. Blackburn has helped parents negotiate the speed bumps, creating an owner's manual for their child. Now, she helps you make this journey.
