One woman, an impossible dream, and the faith it took to see it through, inspired by the life of Hulda Klager German immigrant and farm wife Hulda Klager possesses only an eighth-grade education—and a burning desire to create something beautiful. What begins as a hobby to create an easy-peeling apple for her pies becomes Hulda’s driving purpose: a time-consuming interest in plant hybridization that puts her at odds with family and community, as she challenges the early twentieth-century expectations for a simple housewife. Through the years, seasonal floods continually threaten to erase her Woodland, Washington garden and a series of family tragedies cause even Hulda to question her focus. In a time of practicality, can one person’s simple gifts of beauty make a difference? Based on the life of Hulda Klager, Where Lilacs Still Bloom is a story of triumph over an impossible dream and the power of a generous heart. “Beauty matters… it does. God gave us flowers for a reason. Flowers remind us to put away fear, to stop our rushing and running and worrying about this and that, and for a moment, have a piece of paradise right here on earth.”

Friddie, 18, is an ordinary yet rebellious young Jewish woman, living in Bucharest in the 1930s. Born and raised in Romania's capital, she dreams of living as a "free Romanian woman." After calling off her wedding to a young, parentally-approved accountant, she escapes to a city on the coast, where she meets a scientist-perfumer named Freddy. He is the true love she has been looking for-and a ticket to her dream. Soon, though, that dream turns into a nightmare she never could have predicted. Friddie's story of incredible hardship is interwoven with the stories of her family. We follow her Aunt Rosa's life as the glue of her household, even though she loses her husband in mysterious circumstances; her Uncle David, who dreams of becoming a schoolteacher and starting a family in Iași, and her cousins, who uproot their lives in Bucharest to start again in Israel. In this tragic-heroic novel, the true stories, the victims, and the small moments of happiness are revealed in the Danube's labor camps, under the fascist-dictatorial and communist rule that has been a part of Romania for so many years. Based on the true experiences of a Jewish Romanian family, Where the Lilacs Bloom Once Again unearths stories that could so easily be lost to the passage of time. This family's tale has emerged at a critical time, to show the need for compassion and kindness, even in the hardest moments. About the author Roni (Aharona) Rosenthal, PhD, was born in Haifa, Israel. She is named after her grandfather Aharon, who passed away eight months before her birth. Roni is the Director of Judaic Studies and a Hebrew Literature Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. This is her third novel.

This book will surprise some, anger some, rekindle the human spirit in some, re-establish partnerships of the sixties and seventies, and make some laugh, but its main point is to get you to talk to your Black friends at work, politicians in your cities and your neighbors to dispell the myth that there is no race problem in America anymore. What you are seeing today is the shaking off of the "chains of intimidation" of Black people who are now speaking out. You are about to witness the rebirth of the Civil Rights Movement all over again. Where do you stand?

"The pen is shaking in my paralyzed hand as I write: I AM ALIVE! I am alive and it is May again. The lilacs are in bloom and I smell their sweet fragrance again. There was springtime last year as well, but we had no eyes for beauty. Our lips forgot how to smile, our hearts were shattered! And now I'm alive again!" It is June 1, 1945, as Anna Hegedüs writes her memoir from her hometown of Szatmár, Hungary. She has survived the ghetto--the prologue to her Greek tragedy; survived Auschwitz--the first act; the horrific Schlesiersee camp--the second act; and a death march--the brutal third and final act. It is there, however, that Anna was separated from her daughter, Agnes, and now, as she writes with her memories so raw, she waits desperately for Agnes's return.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • One million copies sold! Inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this remarkable debut novel reveals the power of unsung women to change history in their quest for love, freedom, and second chances. “Extremely moving and memorable . . . This impressive debut should appeal strongly to historical fiction readers and to book clubs that adored Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See.”—Library Journal (starred review) New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France. An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences. For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. This book of short stories is called fiction, which is often considered the result of a person's unbridled imagination gone berserk. But it is much more than that; fictional stories allow one to freely examine that which is not accepted as a truth or not considered a real possibility without the fear of reprisal from society's convention. The maxim offered by the great philosopher of Samos suggests that one seek his own truth and not that of another. To actively seek truth for one's self will give an accepted truth from effort and not merely acceptance. How can one seek his own truth? This book is founded on many stories that are pure fiction, although a few contain a bit of truth. Two of them, however, are exactly true without a shred of fiction or imagination attached. Read this book and find them. I t is a demonstration called: seeking truth. Consider the principle theme called metempsychosis offered in many stories contained in this book. Millions of thinkers deny it a possibility. A few thinkers offer the notion from ignorance that one returns from death as some kind of animal, however, once human, always human. Pythagoras only claimed to have returned as human. If you acted like an animal in human form, then you would return as an animal in human form. All cultures and religions once accepted transmigration as fact which was and is held as truth by billions of thinkers. Do not allow another to think for you. Great numbers of believers in any direction cannot offer an absolute truth, one only need look to fanatical mob mentality to see this is a fact. Perhaps this book will stimulate your thinking.
