Scripture says, "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding" (Jeremiah 3:15). Most of Israel's pastoral imagery is grounded in two traditions: Moses as God's under-shepherd and David as shepherd-king. These traditions, explains author Timothy S. Laniak, provided prototypes for leaders that followed, and formed the background for the ministry of Jesus, the good shepherd. The pastoral role was central to the ongoing life of local churches in the Christian movement, and today's pastors are still called to be shepherds after God's own heart, to lead his people, living on the margins of settled society, to their eternal home. In this excellent study, Laniak draws on a wide range of Old and New Testament texts to develop the biblical theology of "shepherd" imagery, and concludes with some principles and implications for contemporary pastoral ministry. A wonderful resource for pastors, teachers and seminary students, as well as readers interested in the study of biblical imagery.

Ten years ago, the United States contracted with a private American and European research institute to develop a biochemical artificial intelligence system for use in a very unique computer. That research was subcontracted to a firm in China. This year the early prototype was completed and released by that institute to the United States, while the Chinese firm covertly shared the information with their political and business allies, thus starting a new era. The President of the United States stalls while governments from all over the world join GATE in an effort to help their people. The United States is pressured to join other world governments or lose all trade rights in the global market, thereby destroying the U.S. economy. Across the nation a dramatically rapid increase in crime and a fear of economic disaster has led to massive demonstrations in support of GATE. As demonstrations increase they have turned violent with rioting in the streets and all of this has led to talk in Congress of impeaching the President. In Europe, elite U.S. military forces use a Top Secret aircraft to learn more about GATE, and are hunted by those who were allies. The Shepherds race against time . . . DAVID K. BAKER has served as an Anglican priest in Indiana, California and Arizona, and is presently serving as the Rector of Grace Anglican Church in Idaho. He has taught undergraduate criminal investigation courses in Germany, taught first and second grades in a private academy in California, and served over twenty years in the U.S. Army, eighteen of which were with the CID. He presently lives in Idaho with his wife Jeanmarie.

At Borough Farm, on North Devon's rugged, spectacular coast, David Kennard and his dogs are embarking on a new shepherding year. Part diary, part Herriot-like homage to the countryside and its characters, this book is a portrait of a real life. Kennard presents twelve months with his working sheepdogs as they face a never-ending series of challenges: from rescuing ewes stranded on the Atlantic cliffs to running the gauntlet of psychopathic rams and officious farm inspectors, from spring lambing and summertime shearing to fending off the ever-present threats nature has in store for the 850-strong flock. All this, in the midst of a harsh economic climate for farming and a landscape that is among the most picturesque, yet wildly unpredictable, in the British Isles. As he follows the changing seasons, he also offers a meditation on man's relationship with his environment, and an elegy to a rural way of life.--From publisher description.

On September 15, 1963, a Klan-planted bomb went off in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Fourteen-year-old Carolyn Maull was just a few feet away when the bomb exploded, killing four of her friends in the girl’s restroom she had just exited. It was one of the seminal moments in the Civil Rights movement, a sad day in American history . . . and the turning point in a young girl’s life. While the World Watched is a poignant and gripping eyewitness account of life in the Jim Crow South: from the bombings, riots, and assassinations to the historic marches and triumphs that characterized the Civil Rights movement. A uniquely moving exploration of how racial relations have evolved over the past 5 decades, While the World Watched is an incredible testament to how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go.

""A book where the author leads the reader by the hand through their worst nightmare."" ""An accurate but enjoyable account of life in a late twentieth century psychiatric hospital."" Description 'While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks' is based upon the author's own real life experience of mental breakdown, hospitalisation and subsequent detention under Section 5(2) and Section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983, beginning in the Spring of 1989 and lasting for the duration of seven months. The story is presented as a fictionalised account. The author assumes the role of Alex, the female patient in the 1980s at Blackwood Psychiatric Hospital, housed within the precincts of an Old Victorian asylum. 'While Shepherds Watched their Flocks' has been written over a period of years and, while the basic story remains unaltered, its presentation has changed to reflect the author's growing awareness of the events that surrounded her breakdown. Knowledge gained whilst concurrently studying psychology at the University of London has greatly assisted in enabling the author to make thorough appraisal of her own illness. The book comes to a positive climax as Alex leaves the unit to re-enter life in the community. This is a touching, though-provoking, human interest story which has at its heart the basic human struggle for survival against insurmountable odds. It is in turn a love story, a tragedy and a real life drama as well as being interspersed with a measure of black comedy and feeling of suspense that keeps the reader with a real sense of "what happen next?" 'While Shepherds Watched their Flocks' is a book that should appeal to a wide audience. About The Author Born on 14th May 1966 and privately educated in a convent school until the age of sixteen, I rebelled and left against my parent's wishes. In 1989 I had my first psychiatric hospital admission. During follow-up I was diagnosed with manic-depression. My happiest and most productive years followed until, like the Sword of Damocles, manic-depression struck again in 2002, this time with much greater severity. I would currently describe myself as in the latter stages of recovery. Leading a quiet life in my West London home I'd say my passion for animals together with buying and selling on eBay is helping to keep me sane
