But there was another change which puzzled the young observer much more; Ramona seemed suddenly to have awakened to the power which her beauty and youth gave her over her husband, and displayed it in a thousand caprices. She began to complain of the seclusion in which she lived, as if she had but just discovered it; and Stonehenge, whose heart was naturally tender and confiding, suffered her to assume a liberty which, considering her foreign education and ignorance of the world, was not very advisable. Time passed in these fluctuations, and meanwhile Ingulph's attention, after the experience he had acquired of the party volant, was frequently directed to the singular proceedings of De la Pole.
