This is the story of a Swiss businessman who thought he had fulfilled his dreams, but then realized that on the way, he had lost sight of his real goals. He let go of what he had achieved, sold his company and regained what he had lost: his freedom. His autobiography, which reads like a suspenseful novel, is a great success story with heart and soul. And he has found the recipe to happiness. - The man is Stephan Bosshard Although Stephan Bosshard was born (on August 6, 1960) and raised in Switzerland, it wouldn't be quite appropriate to call him the typical Swiss. Due to his not exactly carefree childhood, he took his life into his own hands quite early and began to dream of true happiness. He found it - not where one might expect, in his success and wealth, but in the subtleties of daily life. He learned from experience that true happiness consists of love, leisure time and good health. On the zenith of his career - around the turn of the Millennium - he decided to let go. He sold his life's work, the famous "Pretzel King" business, at a profit. For the time being, that spelled a Happy End to his earlier chase after happiness. Today, Bosshard lives a happy, contented life - with his wife and their dog GIGI - away from any common daily routine, in Switzerland and on his yacht in Florida. He is convinced that on the way he has found his "Recipe for Happiness". For this second edition of Civilization in Transition, essential corrections have been made in the text, and the bibliographical references have been brought up to date. This volume contains essays bearing on the contemporary scene and, in particular, on the relation of the individual to society. In the earliest one (1918), Jung advanced the theory that the European conflict was basically a psychological crisis originating in the collective unconscious of individuals. He pursued this theory in papers written during the '20s and '30s, focusing on the upheaval in Germany, and he gave it a much wider application in two major works of his last years ^DDL The Undiscovered Self, concerned with the relation between the individual and a mass society, and Flying Saucers, on the birth of a myth which Jung regarded as compensating the scientistic trends of our technological era. An appendix contains documents relating to Jung's association with the International General Medical Society for Psychotherapy.

Jung forms one of the basic texts of twentieth-century thought: at once foundational for depth psychology and pivotal for intellectual, cultural, and religious history. The writings presented here, spanning five decades, embody Jung's attempt to establish an interdisciplinary science of analytical psychology, and apply its insights to the fields of psychiatry, criminology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, personality psychology, anthropology, physics, biology, education, the arts and literature, the history of the mind and its symbols, comparative religion, alchemy, and contemporary culture and politics, among others: each in turn has been decisively marked by his thought. Of timely and ongoing relevance to the understanding of these fields, Jung's writings are at the same time essential reading for any understanding of the making of the modern mind.

During the late Middle Ages, a considerable number of men in Germany and Switzerland were executed for committing sodomy. Even in the seventeenth century, simply speaking of the act was cause for censorship. Here, in the first history of sodomy in these countries, Helmut Puff argues that accusations of sodomy during this era were actually crucial to the success of the Protestant Reformation. Drawing on both literary and historical evidence, Puff shows that speakers of German associated sodomy with Italy and, increasingly, Catholicism. As the Reformation gained momentum, the formerly unspeakable crime of sodomy gained a voice, as Martin Luther and others deployed accusations of sodomy to discredit the upper ranks of the Church and to create a sense of community among Protestant believers. During the sixteenth century, reactions against this defamatory rhetoric, and fear that mere mention of sodomy would incite sinful acts, combined to repress even court cases of sodomy. Written with precision and meticulously researched, this revealing study will interest historians of gender, sexuality, and religion, as well as scholars of medieval and early modern history and culture.
