William Carlos Williams is widely acknowledged to be among the most important American poets of the twentieth century. This collection includes sixteen new essays from many of the world's leading authorities on Williams, and is published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of his death in 1963. The volume contains fresh assessments of the nature and extent of Williams's profound and enduring impact on contemporary American poetic traditions, while providing a platform for appraising the neglected achievement of Williams as a writer of fiction and short stories. In doing so these and other essays highlight the nature and importance of Williams's relationship to working class life in twentieth-century America. Additionally, the volume groups together studies focusing on the enduring legacy of Williams's long poem, Paterson, and essays which revise Williams's perceived neglect of African-American and Native-American culture and history.

This collection of 19 essays is the first one devoted to function-oriented analyses of intermedial interrelationships in literature, art, music, and film. The contributors — among others, Werner Wolf, James Heffernan, Walter Bernhart, Siglind Bruhn, Claus Clüver, Valerie Robillard, and Tamar Yacobi — are leading international scholars in the field of intermediality. The common basis of the essays in this volume — ranging from intermedial studies of medieval liturgical practices, early cinema, modernist art, ekphrasis, music and literature, art and literature, film and literature, hymns, and pop music, to the musical and technological aspects of Concrete poetry — is the ambition to pay attention to the cultural contexts that enhance the significance of these intermedial works and trends under examination. Since the contributions cover different types of intermedial endeavours from various periods and times, a kind of historicizing perspective is outlined. So, in pursuit of a still lacking coherent historical survey of cultural functions of intermediality, this volume might be recognized as a step towards such a Funktionsgeschichte for intermedial exploration.

This book is a major step toward a fuller exploration of the connection between the visual arts and Williams' concept of the Modernist poem and of his achievement in transcending an art-for-art's-sake formalism to create poems that both reflect their own nature as a work of art and vividly evoke the world of which they are a part.

Martz (English, emeritus, Yale) argues that the prophetic tradition, with its focus on the evils of the present, as well as the possibilities of redemption should be understood as an integral component of both the texture and contents of works by such modernist poets as Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot and others. Biblical prophecy, he asserts, is an important precedent for the tone and subject matter of these poets' works. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Viewing Louis Zukofsky as a reader, writer, and innovator of twentieth-century poetry, Sandra Stanley argues that his works serve as a crucial link between American modernism and post- modernism. Like Ezra Pound, Zukofsky saw himself as a participant in the transformation of a modern American poetics; but unlike Pound, Zukofsky, the ghetto-born son of an immigrant Russian Jew, was keenly aware of his marginal position in society. Championing the importance of the little words, such as a and the, Zukofsky effected his own proletarian "revolution of the word." Stanley explains how Zukofsky emphasized the materiality of language, refusing to reduce it to a commodity controlled by an "authorial/authoritarian" self. She also describes his legacy to contemporary poets, particularly such Language poets as Ron Silliman and Charles Bernstein.
