Captain Scholland an instructor in the Royal Marines and a member of the U.N. Force spends his leave with his wife Candida in the area of Israel near the Lebanese border. A skirmish between a gang of terrorists and the Israeli border force results in the death of Candida and the Captain is wounded. After recovering from his wounds he resigns his commission and eventually offers himself for hire as a hard man among the criminal fraternity, abandoning his school girl daughter to the care of her aunt. He had assumed the name of Candor as a tribute to his wife. Eventually he is hired to destroy the Knesset in Jerusalem and having a hatred of the Israelis who he blamed for the death of his wife he travels to Israel and with help from the Palestinians attempts to carry out his task. He is thwarted by two Mossad agents and a British police officer and his own daughter who, not recognizing him prevents Scholland from killing her husband, one of the Mossad agents, by shooting him, not being aware that he is her father as it is years since he left her with her aunt. The assassin is later murdered whilst in hospital recovering from his wounds, by another hit man also hired by the people who had recruited him as revenge for his having killed one of their own men.

A detailed chronicle of a significant opening battle in the Anglo-Zulu War: ”The Zulu attack on Rorke’s Drift thrillingly retold” (Richard Holmes). On January 22nd, 1879, the British Army in South Africa was swept aside by the seemingly unstoppable Zulu warriors at the Battle of Isandlwana. Nearby, at a remote outpost on the Buffalo River, a single company of the 24th Regiment and a few dozen recuperating hospital patients were passing a hot, monotonous day. By the time they received news from across the river, retreat was no longer an option. It seemed certain that the Rorke's Drift detachment would share the same fate. And yet, against incredible odds, the British managed to defend their station. In this riveting history, Colonel Snook brings the insights of a military professional to bear on this fateful encounter at the start of Anglo-Zulu War. It is an extraordinary tale—a victory largely achieved by the sheer bloody-mindedness of the British infantryman. Recounting in detail how the Zulu attack unfolded, Snook demonstrates how 150 men achieved their improbable victory. Snook then describes the remainder of the war, from the recovery of the lost Queen's Colour of the 24th Regiment to the climactic charge of the 17th Lancers at Ulundi. We return to Isandlwana to consider culpability, and learn of the often tragic fates of many of the war's participants.

There's nothing safe about Haven, nor is there justice, truth, or honesty. The only thing stemming the forces of darkness from overtaking the city is the Guard, but even they are susceptible to bribes, threats, and general maliciousness. However, two members of the Guard hope to change that. Hawk and Fisher, the husband and wife team, are the only pure forces of good in Haven. They can't be bought. They can't stand for injustice. But they can kick your ass. Working on the side of good in Haven means you have to get used to rubbing elbows with lowlifes. But nothing they’ve faced before has prepared them for this case. The spy they’re trailing leads them to a tower of the aristocratic quality. Donning disguises to infiltrate the tower, Hawk and Fisher risk death if they're caught, but they have to catch the spy before valuable secrets are revealed. However, all is not well in the tower. Maniacal and immortal, a Freak is on the loose, murdering anyone in its path. Now Hawk and Fisher must not only stop the monster before it kills more people, but also find the spy without blowing their cover.

Hailed as “Fallada’s best book” (The New Yorker), this sprawling post-WWI is a portrait of Berlin in a time of great upheaval—and of the common man’s struggle to survive it all Set in Weimar Germany soon after Germany’s catastrophic loss of World War I, the story follows a young gambler who loses everything in Berlin, then flees the chaotic city, where worthless money and shortages are causing pandemonium. Once in the countryside, however, he finds a defeated German army that has decamped there to foment insurrection. Somehow, amidst it all, he finds romance—it’s The Year of Living Dangerously in a European setting. Fast-moving as a thriller, fascinating as the best historical fiction, and with lyrical prose that packs a powerful emotional punch, Wolf Among Wolves is the equal of Fallada’s acclaimed Every Man Dies Alone as an immensely absorbing work of important literature. “An unmissably brilliant portrait of Berlin before the Nazis.” —The Times of London
