Fascinating patient stories and dynamic exercises help you connect to healing emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and discover your authentic self. Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment through an empathic and effective therapeutic approach that draws on the latest science about the healing power of our emotions. Whereas conventional therapy encourages patients to talk through past events that may trigger anxiety and depression, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), the method practiced by Jacobs Hendel and pioneered by Diana Fosha, PhD, teaches us to identify the defenses and inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, and anxiety) that block core emotions (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement). Fully experiencing core emotions allows us to enter an openhearted state where we are calm, curious, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous, and clear. In It’s Not Always Depression, Jacobs Hendel shares a unique and pragmatic tool called the Change Triangle—a guide to carry you from a place of disconnection back to your true self. In these pages, she teaches lay readers and helping professionals alike • why all emotions—even the most painful—have value. • how to identify emotions and the defenses we put up against them. • how to get to the root of anxiety—the most common mental illness of our time. • how to have compassion for the child you were and the adult you are. Jacobs Hendel provides navigational tools, body and thought exercises, candid personal anecdotes, and profound insights gleaned from her patients’ remarkable breakthroughs. She shows us how to work the Change Triangle in our everyday lives and chart a deeply personal, powerful, and hopeful course to psychological well-being and emotional engagement.

Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison gives us a way of understanding our depression which matches our experience and which enables us to take charge of our life and change it. Dorothy Rowe shows us that depression is not an illness or a mental disorder but a defence against pain and fear, which we can use whenever we suffer a disaster and discover that our life is not what we thought it was. Depression is an unwanted consequence of how we see ourselves and the world. By understanding how we have interpreted events in our life we can choose to change our interpretations and thus create for ourselves a happier, more fulfilling life. Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison is for depressed people, their family and friends, and for all professionals and non-professionals who work with depressed people.

In How to Be Miserable, psychologist Randy Paterson outlines 40 specific behaviors and habits, which—if followed—are sure to lead to a lifetime of unhappiness. On the other hand, if you do the opposite, you may yet join the ranks of happy people everywhere! There are stacks upon stacks of self-help books that will promise you love, happiness, and a fabulous life. But how can you pinpoint the exact behaviors that cause you to be miserable in the first place? Sometimes when we’re depressed, or just sad or unhappy, our instincts tell us to do the opposite of what we should—such as focusing on the negative, dwelling on what we can’t change, isolating ourselves from friends and loved ones, eating junk food, or overindulging in alcohol. Sound familiar? This tongue-in-cheek guide will help you identify the behaviors that make you unhappy and discover how you—and only you—are holding yourself back from a life of contentment. You’ll learn to spot the tried-and-true traps that increase feelings of dissatisfaction, foster a lack of motivation, and detract from our quality of life—as well as ways to avoid them. So, get ready to live the life you want (or not?) This fun, irreverent guide will light the way.

WHY SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK when there are so many other books on DEPRESSION out there? Why? Because I have lived with depression. I am living with depression . And I will be living with depression tomorrow. I also assist others who have depression. Here is just some of what I discovered. Life is like a journey but why do you have all kinds of shit happening in your life with so many obstacles in your way, making it hard to move or focus, draining all your energy and throwing you off your path. Why do you feel like this? What the hell is going on? It can be a daunting challenge to say the least. So let me help you navigate through it. Alright, you may think I'm full of crap here.. If you do, I challenge you to throw the book down right now if you think so. To begin, what I found is life is like a journey. So here is a map, a path, a guide to help you navigate your way through all the confusion, and clutter such as endless books written, and advice from many health professionals who have never had depression and have never been through what you may be going through right now yet they are quick to judge, lecture and prescribe. Do they really understand? Here is a way to see through all the noise of personal feel good stories that never last long and advice that may not apply. People assure you are never alone but yet how come you still feel you are? Do you desire instead to not only understand depression better but actually know how to navigate through it and manage it? To start with I did not have a full understanding of depression. Ignorance truly was bliss for me. But it doesn't last. Having a loved one die as a result of depression triggered my own bouts anxiety, stress and into a downfall. It started me on a quest, for over two decades now to learn as much as possible about depression as I could. It was truly necessary to "get it" I had to get it! I realized I became depressed myself! I just had to find my way out. What way was that? I believe it is so important to not just talk the talk but to walk the walk. As a manager, registered nurse and first aid instructor a while back, from my own experiences, and from working in the mental health field now for over 20 years, I have shared my knowledge, skills, and tools acquired with others from preschoolers to seniors citizens. I have also created work shops and delivered numerous presentations. I have travelled to remote work sites to speak with men in their fields, and presenting at first nations communities to speaking in front of hundreds at mental health conferences in large cities, to leading break out sessions and delivering keynotes. Why am I telling you all this? What I am willing to share, I know people want and need to hear. Sometimes we need to hear the same message more than once or twice before it strikes a chord with us and we get that AHA! moment. When will you get your AHA! Moment? With that in mind I purposely laid it all out as if we were taking a trip, picturing it through the eyes and mind of a determined traveller with a specific destination in mind so that it would resonate with you. Alright, let's get started with your journey. What place is the starting point? Where are we heading? How are we getting there? What route are we taking? Who is coming? What are we taking with us? What do we need to leave behind? Are you ready? Grab your map. Let's begin.
