This book presents a listing of two hundred and sixty seven engines delivered to twenty-six American railroads by Ross Winans (1796-1877) of Baltimore, Maryland, during the period 1843 through 1863. It is partially derived from a transcription of his Memorandum of Engines from his personal pocket notebook, in the possession of the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore.1 The material here supplements, corrects, and updates previously published rosters of the output of Winans' deliveries. It is not necessarily a complete, definitive, nor comprehensive roster of the output of Winans' shops. It should be noted that not all of the delivered engines were accepted, and that in some cases, the engines were returned and sold to other roads. Thus, there is some duplication in the list which we attempted to resolve by cross-checking rosters and primary source

Behind the scenes tales of San Francisco's legendary Iron Horse restaurant, as told from the horse's mouth. After her stint in France (I Found My Tomorrow in Paris), Marilyn settles in San Francisco where she eventually meets and marries Leo Giorgetti, the charismatic owner of the Iron Horse from 1954 to 1973. This is the humorous and heartfelt story of Leo and the birth of "The Horse" as seen through "The Horse's" eyes. "From the Horse's Mouth" is a slice-of-life peek into a bygone era when the martini was the drink of the day and hats and white gloves where de'rigeur for the ladies. We rub elbows with the likes of Joe DiMaggio and the famous sports figures of the day and join in the pulsing energy of the standing-room-only crowds. Spontaneous visits from celebrities such as Liberace, Sammy Davis Jr, Lou Rawls or Maria Callas, as she serves salad to the customers, are the norm.

Named a Best Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Public Library This hilarious, colorful portrait of a sex worker navigating life in modern Morocco introduces a promising new literary voice. Thirty-four-year-old prostitute Jmiaa reflects on the bustling world around her with a brutal honesty, but also a quick wit that cuts through the drudgery. Like many of the women in her working-class Casablanca neighborhood, Jmiaa struggles to earn enough money to support herself and her family—often including the deadbeat husband who walked out on her and their young daughter. While she doesn’t despair about her profession like her roommate, Halima, who reads the Quran between clients, she still has to maintain a delicate balance between her reality and the “respectable” one she paints for her own more conservative mother. This daily grind is interrupted by the arrival of an aspiring young director, Chadlia, whom Jmiaa takes to calling “Horse Mouth.” Chadlia enlists Jmiaa’s help on a film project, initially just to make sure the plot and dialogue are authentic. But when she’s unable to find an actress who’s right for the starring role, she turns again to Jmiaa, giving the latter an incredible opportunity for a better life. In her breakout debut novel, Meryem Alaoui creates a vibrant picture of the day-to-day challenges faced by working people in Casablanca, which they meet head-on with resourcefulness and resilience.
