Herbert Summers Lloyd MBE, (April 1, 1887 – January 26, 1963), known commonly as H. S. Lloyd, was best known for being a breeder of show English Cocker Spaniels. He remains the most successful breeder/owner at Crufts, having won Best in Show on six occasions in the 1930s and 1940s. This monograph on the breed has been written at the request of many friends who have urged me to endeavour to place before the novice and newcomer to the breed a simply-written book dealing with the subject from a practical standpoint. I make no claims to any literary genius, but the information contained herein has been gathered through a lifetime’s experience of the dog I love. It is my sincere hope that this volume may prove of some assistance, and if it gives as much pleasure to the reader as it did to me in its compilation I am amply rewarded.

First, Martin details a solid but approachable overview of Georgia barrier island ecosystems—maritime forests, salt marshes, dunes, beaches—and how these ecosystems are as much a product of plant and animal behavior as they are of geology. Martin then describes animal tracks, burrows, nests, and other traces and what they tell us about their makers. He also explains how trace fossils can document the behaviors of animals from millions of years ago, including those no longer extant. Next, Martin discusses the relatively scant history—scarcely five thousand years—of humans on the Georgia coast. He takes us from the Native American shell rings on Sapelo Island to the cobbled streets of Savannah paved with the ballast stones of slave ships. He also describes the human introduction of invasive animals to the coast and their effects on native species. Finally, Martin’s epilogue introduces the sobering idea that climate change, with its resultant extreme weather and rising sea levels, is the ultimate human trace affecting the Georgia coast.
