Like street philosopher Eric Hoffer, whose years as a longshoreman informed his keen observations of life and society, Janice Allred interprets Mormon theology from her perspective as a housewife and mother of nine. But for writing about the traditional, though recently controversial, LDS belief in a Mother in Heaven, she was excommunicated just after Mother's Day 1995 and thereby catapulted into the public spotlight. "Jesus taught us to pray to the Father, " Allred writes, "not to set up barriers between us and God, but to remove them. (God is also) our Mother, a Mother who knows our needs before we can express them, a Mother who is here before we called out to her." LDS church leaders forbid speculation about or praying to the Goddess, but they have stopped short of repudiating her outright. Whether or not one agrees with the author's views, one has to acknowledge her skill in stimulating thought-provoking possibilities that empower women -- which is what she intended.

By demonstrating how each of these works calls for an affirmative engagement with literature, Flore Chevaillier explores a centrally important issue in the criticism of contemporary fiction. Critics have claimed that experimental literature, in its disruption of conventional story-telling and language uses, resists literary and social customs. While this account is accurate, it stresses what experimental texts respond to more than what they offer. This book proposes a counter-view to this emphasis on the strictly privative character of innovative fictions by examining experimental works' positive ideas and affects, as well as readers' engagement in the formal pleasure of experimentations with image, print, sound, page, orthography, and syntax. Elaborating an erotics of recent innovative literature implies that we engage in the formal pleasure of its experimentations with signifying techniques and with the materiality of their medium. Such engagement provokes a fusion of the reader's senses and the textual material, which invites a redefinition of corporeality as a kind of textual practice.

Natural-Theological Understanding from Childhood to Adulthood asks if there is anything about God that children can know independently of any specific cultural input; does their knowledge of God simply come from their everyday encounters with the surrounding world?
