The wind tunnel continues to be the main instrument for providing experimental aerodynamic data to the aerospace industry and the aerodynamic researcher for the purpose of load and performance evaluation and for verification of theoretical results. In both cases it is imperative that the user has confidence in the quality of the results, which means that he must have information on what accuracy to attach to the data. The quality of wind tunnel results depends upon both the accuracy of measurements and the imperfections provided by the wind tunnel environment. Great strides have been made in recent years on measurement accuracy and as a rule this need no longer be of much concern if properly attended to. However, imperfections provided by the wind tunnel environment are still with us and these are today the main sources affecting the quality and accuracy of aerodynamic data obtained in a wind tunnel. It was the purpose of this symposium to try to define what accuracy has presently been achieved in modern facilities and to compare these achievements with the actual demands of the user.

The AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel sponsored this Symposium to provide a survey of the capabilities of the CFD community for griding complex 3-D configurations. The intent was to provide some insight to the present state of grid generation for complex configurations to help assess whether this task presents a long-term stumbling block to the routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. To this end, the meeting was structured in five sessions: General Surveys, Algebraic Grid Generation, Block Structured Meshes, Multiblock-Adaptive Meshes and Unstructured Meshes. Thwenty-two papers from these sessions amply gemonstrated that the viability of a numerical solution depends directly on the quality of the mesh and surface representation as measured by its spacing and resolution. Of Particular interest was the mesh generation for complex configurations, such as advanced fighter or transport aircraft, missiles and space vehicles, where complex geometries and/or complex flowfields have to be analysed. Results from this meeting indicate that geometry discretization and generation of meshes for complex 3-D configurations in aerospace will continue to be time- and cost-consuming operations fro some time to come.

Weaponry is a central factor in any kind of military activity. The incorporation of weapon systems into aircraft and their integration and satisfactory operation is a topic of major importance to armed forces and manufacturers of weapons and aircraft alike. The scope of this symposium was to critically review the overall state-of-the-art in aircraft weapon system compatibility and integration and to illuminate possible paths for future development and provide beneficial ideas and experience. Sessions dealt with the following topics: Theoretical methods and modelling techniques, Experimental and flight test techniques, Integration processes and programmes, Addressing future challenges. This symposium produced many excellent papers providing broad coverage of the weapons integration issues. There were many common threads with regard to the analysis, wind tunnel testing, and flight testing. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proving to be a useful technique; wind tunnel testing is very important in the weapons integration process; but, flight testing has to be the final phase of the weapons integration process. This symposium produced a level of cohesiveness between the analysts and testers; however, full agreement as to the mix of analysis and testing did not evolve. In order to reduce the cost of weapon integration, certification, clearance, and flight testing, weapon integration analytical techniques, including CFD and wind tunnel testing, and flight testing need to become more of an integrated process. The knowledge gained and information shared at this symposium should assist the participants in developing a more integrated process in order to provide NATO nations with fully integrated weapon systems at an affordable price.
