Excerpt from Lessons in Applied Mechanics The present volume consists in great measure of selections from the matter contained in a larger treatise 1 on the same subject, of which it may there fore in a certain sense be described as an abridged edition. The portions selected have, however, been completely rearranged and rewritten in fuller detail with much additional illustration, and the whole con sequently forms a virtually new book, which, being smaller in compass and more elementary in Character, may, it is hoped, serve as an introduction to the larger work, and meet the wants of junior students. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics for Engineers: A d104-Book for Engineering Students In the preparation of this book the author has had in mind the fact that the student finds much difficulty in seeing the applications of theory to practical problems. For this reason each new principle developed is followed by a number of applications. In many cases these are illustrated, and they all deal with matters that directly concern the engineer. It is believed that problems in mechanics should be practical engineering work. The author has endeavored to follow out this idea in writing the present volume. Accordingly, the title "Applied Mechanics for Engineers" has been given to the book. The book is intended as a text-book for engineering students of the Junior year. The subject-matter is such as is usually covered by the work of one semester. In some chapters more material is presented than can be used in this time. With this idea in mind, the articles in these chapters have been arranged so that those coming last may be omitted without affecting the continuity of the work. The book contains more problems than can usually be given in any one semester. While it is difficult to present new material in the matter of principles, much that is new has been introduced in the applications of these principles. The subject of Couples is treated by representing the couples by means of vectors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of Applied Mechanics Other portions of the work, which are wholly or partly new, are indicated in their places. In the arrangement of this treatise an effort has been made to adhere as rigidly as possible to a methodical classification of its subjects; and, in particular, care has been taken to keep in view the distinction between the comparison of motions with each other, and the relations between motions and forces, which was first pointed out by Monge and Ampere, and which Mr. Willis has so successfully applied to the subject of mechanism. The observing of that distinction is highly conducive to the correct understanding and ready application of the principles of Mechanics. Excerpt from Applied Mechanics for Engineers The author's object in writing this book has been to provide a practical statement of the principles of Mechanics. The arrangement adopted is similar to that of his Applied Mechanics for Beginners. Great pains have been taken to make the treatment adequate; principles have been illustrated by numerous fully worked-out examples, and exercises for home or class work have been provided at the ends of the chapters. The working out of typical exercises must be done by every student of Mechanics, but the mere ability to solve examination questions is not the only service the study of Applied Mechanics can render the Engineer. The problems met with in actual engineering practice often differ greatly from the text-book form of exercise, and the student of Mechanics, in addition to a sound knowledge of principles, must learn to appreciate the assumptions involved and the consequent limitations which arise in their practical applications. Consequently, the student must be provided with frequent opportunities for performing suitable experiments under workshop conditions. In the mechanical laboratory he must come into touch with practical problems, and there learn to test and apply his knowledge of principles, and in this work he should have the assistance of a teacher and the criticism of fellow-students. But if the whole value of such laboratory work is to be secured, no slip-shod working out of results must be tolerated. In recognition of the supreme importance of the experience gained in the laboratory, many suitable experiments have been described, and these have been arranged on p.xi to provide a connected course of practical work. The nature and scope of the apparatus available in different laboratories vary greatly, and some of the experiments included are given as suggestions only, so as to be applicable to any form of machine or instrument. Students using the book must have a knowledge of Algebra up to quadratic equations, and of Trigonometry to the simple properties of triangles.
