Emerging from darkness, daring to take form and become something more than the Other, monsters stalk these pages, shifting form in true monstrous fashion as they inhabit literature and film, history and parallel communities modelled after our own. They become enmeshed in popular music, run rampant through cities, take androgynous form to rally for their own identities, their own futures, and their own families, and they hold up mirrors while we are caught shattering our sense of Self. Both the past and the future are rich fodder for the evil that monsters do, and from freak show to homunculus to serial killer to cyborg, they remind us that they are never far from sight - and that we cannot look away even if we wish to. Monstrosity from the Inside Out takes as the paradox that monsters are simultaneously impossible and very much a part of what it means to be human.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The Dexter series continues with Dexter’s deadliest case yet. • The Killer Character That Inspired the Hit Showtime Series Dexter After his surprisingly glorious honeymoon in Paris, life is almost normal for Dexter Morgan. Married life seems to agree with him: he’s devoted to his bride, his stomach is full, and his homicidal hobbies are nicely under control. But old habits die hard—and Dexter’s work as a blood spatter analyst never fails to offer new temptations that appeal to his offbeat sense of justice. Not to mention that his Dark Passenger still waits to hunt with him in the moonlight. The discovery of a corpse (artfully displayed as a sunbather relaxing on a Miami beach chair) naturally piques Dexter’s curiosity and Miami’s finest realize they’ve got a terrifying new serial killer on the loose. And Dexter, of course, is back in business.

Horror is a universally popular, pervasive TV genre, with shows like True Blood, Being Human, The Walking Dead and American Horror Story making a bloody splash across our television screens. This complete, utterly accessible, sometimes scary new book is the definitive work on TV horror. It shows how this most adaptable of genres has continued to be a part of the broadcast landscape, unsettling audiences and pushing the boundaries of acceptability. The authors demonstrate how TV Horror continues to provoke and terrify audiences by bringing the monstrous and the supernatural into the home, whether through adaptations of Stephen King and classic horror novels, or by reworking the gothic and surrealism in Twin Peaks and Carnivale. They uncover horror in mainstream television from procedural dramas to children's television and, through close analysis of landmark TV auteurs including Rod Serling, Nigel Kneale, Dan Curtis and Stephen Moffat, together with case studies of such shows as Dark Shadows, Dexter, Pushing Daisies, Torchwood, and Supernatural, they explore its evolution on television. This book is a must-have for those studying TV Genre as well as for anyone with a taste for the gruesome and the macabre.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 1.0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis aims to answer the following research question: Is it possible to morally absolve Dexter not only from a utilitarian and a Kantian point of view, but are there also aesthetical aspects influencing and reinforcing the viewer’s attitude? As the question consists of two parts, the analysis will correspondingly be carried out in two steps. The first part will investigate if the viewer is enabled to morally justify Dexter’s behavior by positively identifying with him, and if this dynamic is supported and reinforced by stylistic devices such as framing and mise-en-scène. The second part will investigate Dexter’s “activities” on the basis of the two abovementioned ethical theories and apply these to a selection of scenes from various seasons of the series. Unlike the article from dexterdaily.com, which suggests that Dexter may be morally absolved by both utilitarianism and Kant’s ethical theory, a preliminary assumption of this thesis is that Dexter might be offered moral amnesty by utilitarianism, rather than by Kant.
