Excerpt from History of Maryland The editor of the work which it is the purpose of these brief preliminary words. To present to the public for its sufferance and, it is hoped, a measure of satisfaction, has held in mind during his labors certain facts which he conceived to be fundamental in his undertaking. Conformity of style and literary usage was regarded as important. Following the line of least resistance, he undertook to adapt the style of Mr. Mcsherry to that of his own rather than to affect a manner of writing which to him would have been forced and unnatural, and certainly to the reader clumsy and unrewarding. Numerous verbal changes have therefore been made throughout the text. A certain fulsomeness which appears especially in the eulogies in the work has been corrected. These and similar literary changes embrace the greater part of the exercise of the editorial function up to the chapter which relates to the close of the Revolutionary War. From that period to the end of the work the story was too meager to have linked to it the great subsequent events of Maryland's history. It thus became necessary to rewrite the work from that point, although in so doing everything of the author's has found incorporation, although not always in situ. A comparison with the original work will show the large extent of the amplification which was found to be necessary. Excerpt from Tales of Old Maryland: History and Romance on the Eastern Shore of Maryland It is not to be supposed that the sketches contained in this little volume cover all those places and persons of the Eastern Shore that might be justly entitled to an appearance here. I have merely collected those which in my humble opinion were the most interesting and were more available. I am one of those who think the Eastern Shore of Maryland the "Garden Spot" of the World - have been taught that from the cradle up. Many of the tales told here are some we have heard since childhood, and as this is an inquiring age, in recent years I have looked into them a little to ascertain just how much was fiction and how much was truth. Excerpt from History of Dorchester County, Maryland This fragmentary collection of local history and biography is only a glimpse at the interesting events occurring in Dorchester County from its origin, two hundred and thirty-three years ago, to the present day. In compiling this local record, references to State events and people have been frequently made in order to explain the cause and effect of local acts which have had their influences in county affairs. Especially has it been the purpose to note the names of the promoters of the county as well as to mention their deeds. In this fast age of book and newspaper literature when every inmate of the American home must daily read the current his tory of the world as it transpires, there is no reasonable excuse why a history of Dorchester County Should not be published. It has been the desire of the author to give a truthful narration of the events treated, and while the diction may not be all that could be desired, it is set forth as an earnest effort, to which the reader is asked to bestow that indulgence which the work merits. If due credit has not been given, either by reference or quotation, for any language used in this book, it is an act of unintentional omission. Excerpt from History of Maryland: From Its First Settlement in 1634, to the Year 1848 In this work the author has endeavored to compress together, in a popular form, such events in the history of Maryland as would interest the general reader, and to give a simple narration of the settlement of the colony; its rise and progress; its troubles and revolutions; as well as the long periods of peace and serenity, which beautified its early days: - to picture the beginning, the progress, and the happy conclusion of the war of independence - the fortitude and valor of the sons of Maryland upon the field, and their wisdom in council. He has, therefore, dwelt upon those portions of the revolutionary battles, alone, in which they bore a conspicuous part. From the close of that war, and the adoption of the constitution of the United States, - mingling and identifying the most important parts of the history of the State, with that of the nation - he has only attempted to sketch out a few of the results, which have denoted its progress and prosperity, avoiding carefully, as unsuited to the object of his labors, the strifes and contentions of parties, however interesting a portion of its political history they may present. In conclusion, he tenders his acknowledgements to the president and other officers and members of the Maryland Historical Society, for the uniform kindness with which they have at all times afforded him access to their archives, and facilitated his researches among their valuable collections. Excerpt from The History of University Education in Maryland The State Of Maryland has been almost extravagantly liberal in bestowing charters on colleges and professional schools. Over forty such charters have been given by the legislature and, in many cases, the result has proved that the gift of a charter was not warranted by the stability Of the institution, to which was thus granted the power of conferring degrees. In many other cases, however, the institutions have grown and flourished, and have had an honorable history.
